On Nights When You Can't Say Help | Small Choices to Keep the Light On
Give your heart a moment to breathe.
Even if you don't bloom, you are beautiful.
Hello, this is Yukino.
On a stormy night, the automatic doors of a convenience store opened.
The driving rain lashed against my cheeks.
My wet clothes clung to my skin.
The white fluorescent lights inside the store felt painfully bright.
The low hum of the refrigerated display cases.
The quiet movements behind the register.
Those sounds felt a little distant.
It was a night where it felt like only my heart was left behind,
on the other side of the refrigerated glass.
As I picked up a warm drink, I suddenly realized.
"Another day that didn't end."
Unanswered messages, things I couldn't decide, words I swallowed—
they all remained deep in my chest.
I didn't have the energy left to go home.
But I couldn't stay here forever either.
Deep in my chest, a small light was flickering.

A candle burning from both ends.
I finished paying and took the receipt.
Usually, I would crumple it up and throw it away.
But that night, for some reason, I couldn't.
Perhaps I was afraid of making everything 'as if it never happened'.
As if I might make today's version of myself transparent, too.
Staring at the receipt, I remembered something from a few years ago.
Back then, I was running day and night.
I was at my desk earlier than anyone else in the morning.
I worked through my lunch break.
At night, I kept repeating 'just a little bit more'.
"You're like a candle burning from both ends."
Someone once said that to me.
One flame is 'things I have to do.'
The other flame is 'the desire to meet expectations.'
Burning from both sides, the 'me' in the middle is slowly being whittled away.
By the time I realized it, I had reached the point of breaking.
'I have to hold on' and 'I might be at my limit' were
echoing in my chest with the same volume on those nights.
It wasn't a matter of one winning to make things easier.
It was just that both were true feelings.
That's why it was painful.

A quiet signal to protect the light
Back then, I couldn't ask for help.
I felt like something would collapse the moment I put it into words.
I felt that showing weakness was the same as losing.
But now, I understand a little bit.
'Help' is not a word of defeat.
It's just the desire to protect the light
coming out as a small signal.
Have you ever seen a streetlight that stays lit even in a storm?
It stays lit because it has a glass cover.
It doesn't go out because it has a windbreak.
Perhaps a candle burning at both ends is the same.
If someone could make a windbreak for you.
If you could entrust one of the flames to someone else for a little while.
The candle could stay lit a little longer.

What it means to protect the light
It means choosing a warm drink on a stormy night.
Trying to dry your wet body as quickly as possible.
Quietly declining unreasonable plans.
Getting enough sleep.
It was the same as taking care of yourself in those ways.
And there are many forms of signals.
Not just the form of speaking out loud.
There is the form of writing it down in a memo.
The form of having someone you trust listen to you.
The form of deciding to do nothing today.
All of those are your quiet words trying to protect the light.
The night I folded my receipt instead of throwing it away
When I stepped out of the convenience store, the rain was still falling hard.
Instead of crumpling the receipt into a ball,
I tried folding it into a thin strip.
Aligning the corners, nice and neat.
It was just a small, simple act.
But that 'feeling of trying to align things' felt like a slightly gentle movement to me right now.
I gently tucked the folded receipt into my pocket.
'For today, this is enough'
I whispered to myself, ever so softly.
Today, I couldn't get everything perfectly in order.
I couldn't tidy everything up.
Even so.
I made it this far.
I chose something warm.
I made sure not to let my body get too cold.
That fact remained on my fingertips, with the weight of a single receipt.
Even on 'nights when you can't speak up,' the light hasn't gone out
There are nights when you can't clearly say, 'Help me.'
Days when you just open the message box and close it again.
Days when you look at your phone screen, let out a single breath, and that's it.
Even if you have nights like that,
your flame has not gone out.
Being able to think, 'Maybe I can talk tomorrow.'
That in itself is proof that the light remains.
Even if it's not perfect.
You are trying to protect your flame within the limits of what you can do today.
That is enough.
Because you've made it through the stormy night
I arrived home and took the contents of my pocket out onto the table.
Keys. Smartphone. A folded receipt.
Outside the window, the rain is still falling.
But inside the room, it is quiet.
The steam from a warm drink rises slowly.
As I stared at the folded receipt, I thought to myself.
If I keep stacking up small choices,
someday, I will find a way to protect myself.
Because you have made it through stormy nights,
you are able to be in this warm room right now.
That is not because you pushed yourself too hard,
but because you have kept the light burning this far.
I believe that fact is more precious than anything else.

Even on nights when you can't say 'help'.
Even on nights when you only fold a receipt.
Each of those small choices to keep the light burning,
is your beauty itself.
Thank you for being here, just as you are.
Thank you.
Even if you do not bloom, you are beautiful.
Kokomichi wants to be a place where you can set down your burdens.
We want to be a place where you don't have to make the fire bigger, but can keep it from going out.
There are days when the stormy night does not end right away.
Even so, there are surely small ways to protect yourself until it does.
Please let me watch over that light with you here.
Until the morning after the storm passes.
I will be waiting for you here, quietly.
