Is there nothing you can do?! Swelling caused by hormonal balance changes: menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause
Even though it is only June, some regions have already seen the end of the rainy season, and the height of summer has arrived early...
How is your swelling doing...?
With it being this hot, air conditioning is essential to prevent heatstroke, which might be cooling the body down more than expected, or perhaps we aren't sweating properly...
Summer is the time of year when the number of people suffering from swelling increases.
I believe that improving lifestyle habits is essential for relieving physiological (non-disease-related) swelling.
Regarding those lifestyle improvements, I have a personal theory:
・Prioritize addressing factors with the greatest impact as causes
・Reduce what you can among the causes (it doesn't have to be zero)
・Find things you can keep doing as much as possible (be prepared for a long battle!!)
That is my personal theory.
However...
Among the many causes of swelling, there are some where I think, I know it has a major impact, but there is no way to improve it through lifestyle habits...
That is,
✅ Changes in hormonal balance (menstruation/pregnancy/menopause)
is it.

Causes of swelling
Women's health concerns are inseparable from hormonal changes and the physical changes that accompany them.
Swelling before/during menstruation, during pregnancy, and during menopause are all thought to be influenced by female hormones.
Swelling before and during menstruation
Swelling before and during menstruation is caused by an increase in a female hormone called "progesterone" (luteal hormone).
This is because progesterone (luteal hormone) has the effect of retaining water in the body.
・ ・ ・
Swelling during pregnancy
Swelling during pregnancy, like during menstruation, is partly caused by an increase in the female hormone 'progesterone'.
Additionally, the increase in blood volume in preparation for childbirth makes it easier for water in the blood vessels to seep out, and the enlarging uterus puts pressure on surrounding blood vessels, which also impairs blood flow.
・ ・ ・
Swelling during menopause
During menopause, the secretion of 'estrogen' decreases, and the imbalance of female hormones disrupts the autonomic nervous system, which is one cause of poor blood circulation.
Furthermore, a decrease in physical activity and muscle mass due to aging can also lead to poor blood and lymph circulation, as well as coldness, which are considered contributing factors.

Massage is effective
As described, swelling before and during menstruation, during pregnancy, and during menopause is all thought to be influenced by female hormones.
While you cannot control hormones with your own will, does that mean you have to give up on improving swelling...?
Honestly, it is certainly harder to resist compared to other causes. But it can be alleviated.
As I wrote in this article about the mechanism of swelling,
what swelling is,
is a state where 'water' in the body
should collect waste products in the body and enter the veins and lymph vessels to be removed, but
because the flow of veins and lymph vessels becomes poor, it is not removed properly,
and it accumulates in places like between cells where it should not stay,
causing the face, hands, and feet to swell.
This can be rephrased as,
even if the flow of veins and lymph vessels becomes poor,if you improve the flow again, the swelling will be resolved.
To improve the flow again,
massage is effective.
Also, even if swelling occurs before/during menstruation, during pregnancy, or during menopause, there is often not just one cause of swelling, but multiple factors involvedso it is also effective to reduce causes other than hormones as much as possible.
For example,
・Be careful not to consume too much salt and consciously consume foods high in potassium
・Habits to warm your body so it does not get coldbe conscious of
・Be careful not to stay in the same posture, such as sitting for a long time
Is it something like that?

With a mindset of not trying too hard
...I have written some logical points, but...
Menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause are all times whenyou often feel unwell physically and mentally in addition to "swelling"I think.
Therefore, it might be important not to worry too much even if you are more swollen than usual.
If you try too hard, thinking you must solve it through your own efforts, it may end up becoming a source of stress.
At such times, it would be good to
take a long, relaxing bath,
burn an aroma oil with your favorite scent,
listen to your favorite music,
or try taking a slow walk within a comfortable range,
and consciously take somerelaxation timethat helps loosen up your body and mind.
(Well, I know there are many times when even that feels like a hassle or too much work 😓)
That said,
I know that swelling that causes lethargy or pain is difficult,so at such times, please make use ofNatsuko Hitomi's mobile massage service that you can receive at home.

That concludes, Nothing you can do?! Swelling due to hormonal balance changes during menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause.
Thank you for reading until the end.

(Note) This article discusses research and relief effects for physiological swelling, but there are cases where swelling is caused by illness or requires medical treatment.
If you do not usually swell and suddenly experience swelling without any apparent cause,
if the swelling does not improve after a few days,
or if the swelling is significantly different between your left and right hands or legs,
it might be a good idea to visit a medical institution.

(Note) Regarding the word "massage"
In this text, this word is not limited to the original meaning of "treatment performed by a nationally certified massage and shiatsu practitioner," but is used in the "broad sense of massage" commonly used in Japanese, including by non-specialists.
