The View Beyond 'Maybe I Can't Go Any Further' | Taking a Step to Believe in Yourself When You Feel Your Limits While Hiking
Have you ever felt like you couldn't go any further while hiking?
That moment when your feet stop and you feel like you're losing the reason to keep moving forward.
But it is precisely beyond that point that you sometimes discover a strength you never knew you had.
Sweat dripped from the brim of my hat.
I stared blankly as the sweat disappeared into the ground.
My legs were starting to refuse to listen to me.
200 meters left to the ridgeline.
Looking only at the numbers, it was just a little bit more.
But those 200 meters felt so far away.
The moment when '200 meters left' felt distant
'How much further?'
I hadn't said it out loud.
I was repeating the same words over and over in my heart.
Only the sound of my breathing sounded strangely loud.
Was it the sound of the grass swaying?
Or was my own breath just mixing with the wind?
I couldn't tell anymore.
My body wanted to move forward, but my legs were heavy.
I thought, is it really this difficult to take a single step?
That was when it happened. I suddenly heard it.
—You can still do it.
It wasn't that someone had said it to me.
I hadn't been encouraged by anyone either.
It was a voice that came from within myself.
The voice I heard from within when I thought I had reached my limit
It was strange.
It wasn't that I thought, 'Let's do my best.'
It wasn't that I had psyched myself up again, either.
After hearing that voice, my legs moved just a little bit.
It felt as if my body had given the answer first.
I walked little by little. I took one step. Then another.
They weren't big steps.
But those small steps were definitely closing the distance.
I finally reached the ridgeline.
The mist was being swept away by the wind.
Unfortunately, there was no view.
There was no blue sky I had hoped for, nor a vista that stretched out into the distance.
Strangely, I felt like I could see ahead.
The moment I spotted the sign for the campsite, a voice escaped my lips.
"I finally made it."
Those words held more than just the relief of arriving.
It felt as if I had reached a place I didn't even know existed within myself.
What stayed with me more than the summit
The old me might have decided "I can't do this anymore" the moment I felt my limits. When things got tough, I would look for reasons to give up rather than reasons to keep going.
But that day, I realized something.
The moment you feel "maybe I can't" might not be the true end.
It means there is still a margin left that even you haven't noticed yet.
Of course, this isn't about pushing yourself recklessly.
In the mountains, the decision to turn back is also necessary.
Prioritizing safety is an essential skill for any hiker.
But there are moments when you can find that "little bit more" within yourself.
It is your feet that are climbing, but there are things that cannot be measured by distance alone.
What left a deeper impression on me than the view I saw on the ridge that day was...
"I can still go on."
...the fact that I was able to say that to myself.
The moment of "one more step" in everyday life
That small voice remains with me even after coming down from the mountain.
When I'm lost at work.
When I'm taking on something new.
When I think about giving up.
That step from that day is, before I know it, pushing me forward.
A limit is not necessarily a wall that must be overcome.
Beyond the place where you decided "this is as far as I go,"
there is sometimes a version of yourself you haven't met yet.

Whether in the mountains, at work, or in daily life, have you ever had a moment where you were able to take one more step after thinking "maybe I can't"? What was it that moved you at that time? Please let me know in the comments if you'd like.
