Customer Engagement Is the Deepening of 'Relationships'

The Four Layers That Make Up Marketing

In the previous installments of this series, I discussed the basics of marketing: branding, targeting, and communication. In this final installment, I will discuss "customer engagement", which is the key to integrating these elements.

Customer engagement does not simply mean a "connection with customers"; it is about building a "deep bond" with them. This is not merely a sales promotion activity or a campaign, but an activity that nurtures a long-term and continuous relationship between the customer and the company.

Why is this "relationship" important? It is because modern consumers have changed from mere "consumers" to "partners." In an age overflowing with information and numerous choices, customers can easily switch to other brands. That is precisely why companies are required to build strong relationships with them before customers turn their eyes to other options.

One way to increase engagement is to "involve" customers in corporate activities. By participating and expressing their opinions, customers deepen their attachment to the company or brand.
For example, the customer-participatory idea solicitation campaign called "My Starbucks Idea" conducted by Starbucks is a classic example. By having customers propose their own ideas and seeing them realized as products or services, customers feel a strong bond as if they have become a part of the brand.

Even more important is "listening" to the voice of the customer.
No matter how perfect a story a company tells, if the customer's own story is not reflected in it, the customer will not feel deep empathy. Providing a place where customers can tell their own stories, having the company accept those stories, and weaving those stories together is what creates true engagement.

Furthermore, in the digital age, engagement strategies that utilize data are also important. By analyzing customer behavior history and purchasing trends, companies can provide experiences tailored to each individual customer. By receiving special experiences or services just for them, customers deepen their bond with the company even further.

However, it is important to note that these activities should always be customer-centric. If you become desperate to increase engagement and it ends up being a one-sided imposition, it defeats the purpose.
Genuine relationships can only be born when a company truly thinks about the customer and has an attitude of wanting to grow together with them.

Customer engagement is, in short, "walking together". A company understanding, empathizing with, and co-creating value with its customers will likely be the greatest competitive advantage in marketing for the coming era.

I have explained the basic concepts of marketing over the past four installments, but what I want to convey in the end is that true success in marketing is nothing other than building deep and continuous relationships with customers. It is that relationship that leads a company to long-term success.
