Creative Notes in the AI Era | Seeing the response to Banana Yoshimoto's note, I thought that the era where publishers were the only exit might be coming to an end (#CreativeTheory #WebNovel #note #BananaYoshimoto #BookPublication #GenerativeAI #ImageGenerationAI)
Hello. Good evening.
My name is "Ura-byoshi" (Back Cover), and I usually write light novels.
Recently, there has been a lot of buzz surrounding the environment for literary authors.
Amidst that trend, I felt a bit strange.
That is because,
"What will happen to publishing from now on?"
while watching that topic,
at the same time,
"Could it be that a different kind of hope is being born compared to before?"
I also felt that way.
One of the triggers for this was Banana Yoshimoto's note.
Many people gathered for her 500-yen paid article, and it created a huge response.
Of course, Banana Yoshimoto is a prominent author who has been active for many years.
So, it's not a story that can be simply compared.
Even so, while watching that event, I was thinking about something else.
In the past, publishers and bookstores were necessary for authors to deliver their words to readers.
But it's different now.
We are in an era where authors themselves can connect directly with readers.
Isn't this actually a quite significant change?
Since I write web novels,
I inevitably
"Can I get a book deal?"
"Can I win an award?"
I end up thinking about things like that.
But recently, I feel that it is no longer the only exit.
Being chosen by someone is not the only value,
and meeting directly with people who need your words
is also starting to create great value.
I feel that kind of atmosphere.
I remember when YouTube first started.
At the time, YouTube was seen as a "playground for amateurs" from the perspective of television.
But as you all know, that is not how it turned out.
Before we knew it, individual content creators stood shoulder to shoulder with giant media,
and sometimes even gained more influence than them.
In the past, only people chosen by TV stations could reach the masses,
but now individuals directly gather people, build communities, and even create jobs.
While watching this recent event,
I felt that a similar change is beginning in the world of publishing and writing.
Until now, large systems like publishers and bookstores were the main routes for delivering stories to readers.
Of course, that value remains unchanged even now.
However, at the same time,
a route for writers to connect directly with readers in their own words
is also gradually beginning to feel like a reality.
From an era where only the chosen could deliver their work,
to an era where you can deliver it yourself.
If the changes happening now are real,
this might be a significant turning point for the publishing industry.
Watching this change,
I find the current place called 'note' increasingly interesting.
Just as YouTube was once,
at the time, no one thought it would grow into a massive media platform.
But looking back,
the beginning of that change was certainly there.
If a similar change is happening in the world of publishing and storytelling now,
we might unexpectedly be standing at the entrance to an interesting era.
Not just reading works chosen by publishers,
but a world where writers and readers connect directly,
and words themselves gather people.
If one of the epicenters of sucha new trend
is this place called note.
Then spinning words there every day,
reading someone's writing,
and meeting someone there
starts to feel like something a little special.
I don't know about the future.
But I am
quite looking forward to seeing how the world of creation and publishing will change from here on.
Afterword:
Are you familiar with the work 'Ghost in the Shell'?
I'm not that knowledgeable about science fiction itself, but I've always loved the worldview of a 'future where the net and humans are deeply connected' that the work depicts. So when AI appeared, I was honestly quite excited. Thinking, 'Maybe Tachikoma will become a reality!!'
Of course, there are many anxious stories as well. Topics like losing jobs or humans being selected are circulating every day.
But for me, the feeling of 'I am living through such a major turning point' is stronger. That's why lately, I feel there is great significance in recording the changes happening now and my own feelings swaying within them. From the future, this is surely 'the middle of a changing era'.I hope these creative notes will also become a small record that preserves the atmosphere of this era.
