I go by 'Ura-Hyoshi,' and I usually write light novels.

'Overpowered protagonist' stories are often talked about as a 'current trend,' but
I wondered if they might actually have been repeating since much further back,
so I looked into it.

What I found was,
for example, the United States in the 1930s.

During a time when society as a whole was suffering greatly due to the Great Depression,
it seems that invincible heroes with overwhelming power were gaining popularity.

I feel this is quite similar to the structure of 'protagonists who are strong from the start' today.

The more unstable reality becomes, the more people,

rather than 'stories where you work hard and are rewarded little by little,'

might seek

'beings who end unreasonable situations in an instant'

for a sense of security.

Moreover, I feel that daily stress is quite finely dispersed these days.

Anxiety about the future,
human relationships,
endless comparisons,
the 'mental fatigue' that goes on forever,
and things like 'empathy fatigue' caused by social media.

Therefore, 'Overpowered protagonists' might be closer to the feeling of

'I don't want to be worn out any further'

than just a longing for strength.

Thinking about it that way, when writing an invincible protagonist, the
very important point is,

'how strong they are'

rather than,

'what kind of pressure from the reader they erase'

Perhaps that is the case.

Lately, while thinking about these things,

'What do people want to be liberated from in this day and age?'

I have been thinking about my creative work with this idea in mind.
