A Chinese court has sentenced a woman to death for starting a factory fire in an act of vengeance that killed 61 co-workers. Dong Yangling, 20, was convicted in Fuzhou of starting the blaze in a fourth-floor warehouse, the Ta Kung Pao daily said today. The report said it was an act of revenge after the company fired her for stealing. The Dec. 13 fire, at the Taiwan-funded Gaofu Textiles Co. in Fuzhou, 850 miles south of Beijing, spread to a dormitory where about 100 female workers slept. The disaster provoked an outcry over working conditions in foreign-funded factories.
