    ☕ Your morning coffee may be doing more than helping you wake up. A new study published in JAMA followed more than 131,000 people for up to 43 years and found that drinking 2–3 cups of caffeinated coffee per day was associated with an 18% lower risk of dementia compared with drinking little or none. People with higher caffeinated coffee intake were also less likely to report subjective cognitive decline and performed modestly better on certain measures of cognitive function. The strongest associations were seen with moderate coffee intake—about 2–3 cups per day. Researchers believe coffee's benefits may come from more than just caffeine. Coffee is rich in bioactive compounds, including polyphenols, that may help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress—two processes that are closely linked to brain aging. This doesn't mean coffee prevents dementia or guarantees protection. This was an observational study, so it can't prove cause and effect. But it adds to growing evidence that the habits we practice consistently over decades can influence brain health as we age. Your daily habits matter. Sleep. Exercise. Blood sugar control. A nutrient-dense diet. Strong social connections. And yes... your morning cup of coffee may be one small piece of the puzzle. ☕🧠

    Trauma is not just a memory stored in the mind. According to neuroscientists, it is often held in the nervous system itself, shaping how the body reacts long after the original threat is gone. This is why many people understand their trauma intellectually, yet still feel stuck in anxiety, tension, or shutdown despite years of talking about it. Research in neuroscience and trauma physiology shows that traumatic experiences can dysregulate the autonomic nervous system. The body may remain locked in fight, flight, or freeze mode, even when life is safe. Talking therapies are powerful for insight and meaning, but words alone do not always reach the parts of the brain and body where trauma is stored. Trauma affects brain regions involved in sensation, movement, and survival reflexes, not just language and reasoning. This is where physical movement becomes critical. Practices that involve controlled movement, such as walking, stretching, yoga, rhythmic exercise, and somatic therapies, send direct signals to the nervous system that the body is no longer under threat. Movement activates sensory and motor pathways that help recalibrate stress responses and restore balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. Studies show that movement can reduce cortisol, improve vagal tone, and increase neuroplasticity, allowing the nervous system to learn new patterns of safety. Movement based approaches do not replace talking, they complement it. When the body begins to feel safe, the brain becomes more receptive to reflection and emotional processing. This is why trauma informed care increasingly combines cognitive therapies with physical and sensory based methods. Healing is not just about understanding what happened, but about teaching the nervous system that the danger has passed. Trauma recovery is not a purely mental process. It is a whole body rewiring. Understanding this can shift how we approach healing with more patience, compassion, and effectiveness.     Anxiety is not just “too much thinking”—it is the mind trying to predict a future that does not yet exist, and treating it like it is already real. At its core, anxiety is formed in three layers: 1. Uncertainty (What will happen?) The mind dislikes unknown outcomes, so it starts creating scenarios. 2. Overthinking (What if it goes wrong?) The brain repeats worst-case possibilities to feel “prepared,” but actually increases fear. 3. Loss of control (I must fix everything now) When control feels lost, the mind tries to regain it through excessive mental activity. Most anxiety is not about the situation—it is about how the mind is interpreting the situation. ⸻ Case Study: Arjuna’s Mental Breakdown In the Bhagavad Gita, Arjuna experiences extreme anxiety on the battlefield of Kurukshetra War. He is physically present, but mentally collapsed. He says: • “My body is trembling” • “My mind is confused” • “I cannot see any good outcome” This is classic anxiety: awareness without clarity. Krishna does not dismiss his emotions. Instead, He: • Allows Arjuna to express fear fully • Reframes the situation with perspective (duty over emotion) • Brings focus back to action instead of prediction Krishna’s key intervention is simple: Shift from imagination of outcomes → focus on right action. ⸻ Key Lessons to Handle Anxiety • Return to present action Anxiety lives in the future; peace lives in the present. • Separate thought from reality Just because you think something doesn’t make it true. • Reduce mental repetition Thinking the same fear 100 times does not solve it. • Focus on controllables only Effort, preparation, discipline—ignore uncontrollable outcomes. ⸻ Modern Application In today’s world, anxiety increases due to: • constant notifications • comparison on social media • pressure to perform instantly • uncertainty in career and relationships But the solution remains timeless: You cannot control every outcome, but you can control: • your preparation • your response • your next action Even in uncertainty, a calm next step is more powerful than a chaotic thousand thoughts. ⸻ Anxiety does not disappear by thinking more—it reduces when thinking stops dominating action. by Acharya Viren Shah

    Why do traditional trauma strategies sometimes fall short for neurodivergent adults? One of the most common things I hear from coaching clients is: “I’ve done CBT. I’ve tried mindfulness. I understand the techniques, but they don’t seem to stick.” That doesn’t mean these approaches don’t work. They have a strong evidence base and help many people. But for many autistic, ADHD and AuDHD adults, they may be introduced before the nervous system is ready to engage with them. Emerging neuroscience suggests neurodivergent burnout is often far more than psychological exhaustion. It can involve prolonged nervous system activation, increasing allostatic load and changes in the body’s energy systems. Four concepts have transformed my understanding: Allostatic Load Years of masking, sensory overload, constant self-monitoring and adapting to environments that don’t fit gradually place the nervous system under chronic strain. Mitochondrial Overload Long-term stress increases the brain’s energy demands. Researchers are increasingly exploring how reduced mitochondrial efficiency may contribute to the profound fatigue experienced in burnout. Nervous System Mapping Not everyone needs the same intervention. Some people are hyperaroused (anxious, overwhelmed); others are hypoaroused (shut down, exhausted). Recovery begins by identifying the current state, not simply applying a generic technique. Interoception & Heartbeat Detection Many neurodivergent adults struggle to recognise internal body signals. Heartbeat detection and body-awareness exercises can strengthen interoception, creating a stronger foundation before cognitive strategies become accessible. For many clients, recovery starts with bottom-up regulation before top-down approaches such as CBT become effective. Perhaps neurodivergent burnout isn’t a failure of resilience.     “I’m an anxious person…” Jack Draper (U.S. Open semi-finalist) If focus of attention is like a flashlight on your forehead (it can beam outwards onto the performance environment or steer inwards onto self), anxiety can turn that flashlight inwards and down… Inwards and down towards the anxious feelings being experienced in the body at that moment in time. Anxiety captures attention and holds it. And as it captures, it captivates…further turning up the volume of anxiety. Anxiety can beget anxiety… And so, for high performance to ensue, players would do well to have strong mental frameworks in their personal locker. Mental frameworks with mental techniques to help them shift their attention away from the pervasive sensations of anxiety… -Self-talk to weave a story that actually utilises anxiety -Breathing that soothes the nervous system -Embodiment that promotes front-foot play -Cues for reminders of key actions In charge In control Dominating and owning mind, body, and space Ultimately, for good competitors to become great they need to find a psychological framework that enables them to draw on and draw away from performance anxiety. But that’s so simple to write about…devilishly difficult to do!

    We usually assume pain sticks around because something in the body hasn’t healed yet. But this study looked at it differently. Researchers found a loop between the spinal cord and the brain and instead of just passing signals, this loop can keep firing on its own. What’s interesting is how they tested it. When they repeatedly activated this circuit, pain kept going… even without any new injury. When they interrupted it, the pain dropped back to normal. Same body, no new damage. Just a different state. That’s the part that changes things. Pain isn’t always just something being sent from the body. Sometimes it’s something the brain keeps running. Which means in chronic cases, it may not be about fixing tissue alone, but about breaking the loop that’s keeping the pain alive.   • The Anatomy of Anxiety: Understanding the Brain's Response As a psychologist, I often hear people ask, “Why do I feel so anxious?” The answer lies deep within our brain. Anxiety, though uncomfortable, is a natural response, and understanding it can help us manage it better. Let’s break it down step by step. 1️⃣ The Frontal Lobe – The Thinking Brain The prefrontal cortex is the part of your brain responsible for making decisions, controlling impulses, and thinking logically. Now, imagine you’re under stress or anxiety, and your brain is overwhelmed with racing thoughts. The prefrontal cortex starts to shut down or struggle under pressure. It’s like having a foggy windshield while driving—you can’t see clearly, making it harder to make good decisions, focus, or even keep calm. This is why anxious people often find themselves trapped in a cycle of overthinking or losing control of their emotions. 2️⃣ The Limbic System – The Emotional Brain Next up is the limbic system, home to the amygdala, which plays a huge role in processing fear and emotions. When anxiety kicks in, the amygdala goes into overdrive, amplifying emotional responses. Imagine a fire alarm that’s overly sensitive, going off even when there’s no fire. This is how your brain reacts—focusing on perceived dangers or uncertainties and triggering fear responses. It’s why anxiety often feels so overwhelming and irrational: your brain is reacting to perceived threats that may not exist. 3️⃣ The Brain Stem – The Survival Brain When the amygdala triggers the fear response, the brain stem steps in. It’s responsible for activating your fight-or-flight mechanism, releasing stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones prepare the body to take action—whether it’s running away or fighting. But in the case of anxiety, there’s no real danger, and so we experience physical symptoms like a racing heart, sweating, or shallow breathing for no reason. Imagine your body being on high alert even when there’s no actual threat. That’s how anxiety feels on a physiological level. So, What Can We Do About It? Understanding anxiety is the first step to overcoming it. It’s not something that happens randomly—it’s your brain’s response to stress and uncertainty. The good news is, we can retrain our brains to respond differently. Techniques like mindfulness, breathing exercises, and therapy help reset the overactive amygdala and bring the prefrontal cortex back online to help us think logically again. 🌿 Remember: Anxiety is a protective mechanism, but we can teach our brains to respond more rationally, even when things feel out of control. ✨ If you’re struggling with anxiety, I’m here to help.     The obsession with eliminating pain keeps patients stuck. After 15 years treating chronic pain, I've realized we're asking the wrong question entirely. Here's the shift that changed everything for my patients: 1. The "Zero-Pain" Delusion Our culture has created an impossible standard: • Perfect comfort 24/7 • Instant relief from any discomfort • Pain as a "failure" of treatment This is like demanding zero stress, zero sadness, or zero challenge in life. It's not just unrealistic—it's harmful. 2. The Real Problem When patients chase perfect relief, they: • Become hypervigilant to every sensation • Catastrophize normal body signals • Avoid movement and activities • Develop learned helplessness The research backs this up: Studies on hedonic adaptation show that our brains quickly return to baseline even after significant pain reduction. Chasing the high of "zero pain" creates a cycle of disappointment. 3. The Protocol Shift Instead of asking "How bad does it hurt?" I teach patients to ask: "How freely can you live with-and learn from-the signals your body sends?" This isn't about accepting suffering. It's about: • Normalizing pain as information, not emergency • Building confidence in your body's resilience • Focusing on function over sensation • Developing pain literacy, not pain fear 4. The Neuroplasticity Truth Here's what brain research tells us: The more attention we give to pain, the stronger those neural pathways become. But when we shift focus to movement, purpose, and gradual exposure—the brain literally rewires itself. Pain becomes background noise instead of the main event. 5. Making Pain Boring My most successful patients don't have zero pain. They have zero drama around their pain. They've learned to: • Acknowledge signals without panic • Move with confidence despite discomfort • Focus on what they can do, not what hurts • Trust their body's incredible capacity to adapt Pain becomes as boring as breathing—present but not consuming. The Bottom Line Stop trying to eliminate pain entirely. Start teaching your nervous system that pain is information, not emergency. The goal isn't a pain-free life—it's a pain-confident life.
