Sets in Tableau are custom fields that represent a subset of data based on specific conditions. They allow us to isolate and analyze specific subsets of data. By creating sets through attributes, selected values or conditions, we can focus our analysis and uncover deeper insights.
Creating a Set in Tableau
To create a set in Tableau, follow these steps:
- Open Tableau and connect to a dataset.
- Drag and drop a sheet from the connected dataset.
- Open a worksheet (for example, Sheet1).
- On the left panel, we will see all dataset attributes.
We can now create a set using different methods.
Examples of Creating and Using Sets
Here we will discuss some methods to create set in tableau with some examples given below:
Example 1: Create a Set from an Attribute
In this example, we create set by
- Right-click an attribute.
- Select Create and then choose Set.

A set is created for the selected attribute.
Example 2: Create a Set by Selecting Values
In this example, we use a short trick of creating a set of an attribute by
- Select one or more values in the view.
- Right-click and choose Create Set.

This quickly generates a set based on the selected values.
Example 3: Using Sets for Analysis
Once a set is created, we can use it for further analysis:
- Drag the set into the view to compare in/out members.
- Combine it with other fields or measures to highlight specific groups.
- Apply colors or filters based on the set to refine the visualization.

Deleting a Set
If a set is no longer needed:
- Right-click the set field.
- Select Delete.

The set is removed without affecting the original dataset.
