This game actually has something known as "collective protagonist" (when you have a group of protagonists). And the females outnumber the males.

I will admit, that tag immediately made me leery of buying the game since I view that as a shield by more main stream developers to have a way deflect criticism.

But I saw the reviews, read a few and watched a reviewer I trust and his only major complaint, which is a bit valid is that the game can be a bit abstract and info dumpy at sections.

First of all ... tags are user-generated. They can put "whatever" there. You can report it, and if enough people agree, it'll go away. Either way, it's got little to do with developers or publishers and I wouldn't be surprised if the tag is around from even before the game's release, with the promotional material making Irene look like the protagonist; so people were just (wrongly) assuming ...

Secondly, Albus is the protagonist, and any pretense otherwise is laughable. He's the typical generic jRPG dude with some friends and a bunch of girls around, who (as here) often are the marketing focus because the guy couldn't be less interesting if he tried.

To be fair, what makes Albus uninteresting is that we know little about him. The creators are following the mysterious hero trope where you KNOW that there's more going on in their head but it's being kept secret for the big reveal. All you know from playing the base game is that something happened to his mother and he has an aunt Liliy. By the end you realize Lily is also hiding something and he has a connection to another member.

All we can do is hope that when we finally learn more about the guy it's worth the wait.

All that said, since I've started the Lion and Witch dlc...i have to ask. Is Bianca a tsundere? Cause her actions and behavior around Albus seem to hint to it.

He's uninteresting because he's boring, not because he's got some mysterious secret that's not revealed. He's got no charm, no personality. He's just the generic "I'm here to help" sorta stick. Oh-so hard-working and serious; what an utterly fascinating person. ^^ The mildest of cynicisms he manages once or twice are about as far he goes from just being some Albot2.0.
As is far from unusual, the various party members and other NPCs with their quirks and eccentricities are much more fun - now, obviously, that doesn't mean they'd necessarily work as main character or that whatever their gimmick is wouldn't be tiresome by the end of the game if they were the main focus. But Albus, blergh. He's got nothing, and he's the single biggest drag on the game for me.

Somebody joked about him above, but I remember reading a long while back that the sequel might feature Carter as protagonist (not that it was definite or anything); which frankly just sorta makes me want to cry. Couldn't agree more. Both Carter as well as Albus are probably some of the most generic boring characters. There is a reason Albus doesn't get much screentime on any of the store page screenshots and if he does then he looks like a side character.

I find it absolutely bizarre that people can play this game and come away with the perception that Albus is a generic jrpg protagonist. "The generic "I'm here to help" sorta stick. Oh-so hard-working and serious; what an utterly fascinating person."

He's a scheming, conniving ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who understands the necessity of gold-plated PR. He doesn't care about upholding the law, either. I find him very refreshing.
