Revisiting 'Chi: On the Movements of the Earth' — Where Do Romance and Motherhood Lie?

In this story,

No one has left behind any 'descendants'.

Everyone dies in the middle of their dreams.

So, in the end, nothing is passed on to anyone.

What a fictional, virtual-reality story makes us realize. Uoto's work incorporates plenty of that.

And another thing that caught my attention is,

'Eyes'.

Even in the opening,

The one that appears first in the opening, where Sakanaction's 'Kaiju' plays,

The protagonists of each chapter. The eyes of 'Rafal', 'Oczy', and 'Dorka' are,

drawn with wide whites and small pupils.

They are not sane. The eyes of madmen.

That's right, they are abnormal.

I feel that the meaning behind writing 'Chi' (Earth) in katakana within the themes of 'Chi' was

an directorial choice to have each character embody themes such as 'blood,' 'knowledge,' 'wisdom,' 'governance,' 'childishness,' 'value,' 'placement,' 'attainment,' 'delay,' 'execution,' 'running,' and 'slackening.'

Honestly, it might not appeal to those looking for entertainment-focused anime, but

it is a case of 'those who get it, get it.'

If anything, it is closer to a literary novel than the anime genre, and the viewer is asked and expected to answer questions regarding simple themes.

In this story, everyone is a supporting character, and it seems to be composed entirely of supporting characters.

'Chi'

is the protagonist, and in reality, everything remains lost in the end, and it concludes by throwing a fastball at the viewer, as if to say, 'You already know the ending, don't you?'

After coming full circle, I grew to like the fictional character 'Novak.'

The realization and repentance of the terrifying inquisitor villain, who lived without a doubt believing that his love for his daughter and his faith in God were justice,

felt far more human and endearing to me than any of the other characters.

He crushed his daughter, the hope of his life, with his own beliefs as an inquisitor who rose from being a mercenary, and his faith in God.

Perhaps if he had stood by her side and explored astronomy together, a different future might have been possible.

'Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.'

Saint-Exupéry's words strike at my heart.

The characters in this story may have reached enlightenment in a sense, but

it could hardly be called a happy life.

After all, they were unable to even leave behind descendants, who were meant to be spun from their own mothers.

It was a very good anime.

And I decided to cherish my own reality—to live alongside the characters of the real world in my own era, not theirs.
