Three Elements I Believe Are Necessary for Self-Study in Elementary School
I believe that from around elementary school age, it is better to be able to self-study to some extent.
The reason is that if they study on their own and become capable on their own, it would be easy... incredibly easy... both economically and for my mental health...
Trying to teach them yourself makes you emotional, and on the other hand, cram schools cost money (and even if they go to cram school, self-study skills are still necessary).
So, this time, I will consider what is necessary for elementary school students to self-study.

Three elements I believe are necessary for self-study in elementary school

The elements necessary for self-study, not just for elementary school students, are
[Study Habits] Being able to start studying on your own and complete the necessary amount.
[Reading Comprehension] Being able to understand and learn the content you are studying on your own.
[Study Management Skills] Discovering the tasks necessary to achieve your goals on your own and preparing the materials to solve them.
It feels something like that.
In the case of elementary school students, I think it would be fine if they have acquired these study habits and reading comprehension skills.
My eldest daughter has also acquired two of these, 'study habits' and 'reading comprehension,' while her study management skills are moderate.
Element ① necessary for elementary school self-study [Study habits at home]

The most necessary element for elementary school self-study is study habits at home.
The way to acquire them is something like the following.
Reduce troublesome elements
Try to do it at the same time
Choose something you can enjoy (rewards are also okay)
For details, please refer to the following article.
My eldest daughter has made it a habit to wake up at 5:30 AM and study until around 7:00 AM. (She says it's hard to concentrate in the evening because her younger sister gets in the way, or she's tired from school and extracurricular activities.)
Element 2 for elementary school independent study: [Reading Comprehension]

Reading comprehension is necessary to understand reference book explanations, lectures, and answer keys on your own.
To acquire it,
Make it possible to read text (e.g., reading aloud to them when they were young)
Provide an environment where they can access many books (Kindle Unlimited, Amazon Kids+)
Have many conversations
Use materials that improve reading comprehension (Fukushima Method)
Games that require thinking
I think doing things like these is good.
I use materials for improving reading comprehension called the "Fukushima Method", but it was hard to get to that point. (It's okay not to force it while they are in the lower grades.)
Once they have acquired reading comprehension, they will learn from books and other sources on their own, so there will be no need for you to teach them.
Also, there is the benefit that they will be able to learn other knowledge and skills on their own, not just studying for school or entrance exams.
・Eiken: Since she reads reference books to learn how to do it, all I have to do is correct her English compositions and act as a mock interviewer.
・RipStik: She learned how to practice on her own and became able to ride it.
・Digital Art: She is currently practicing after researching how to draw and how to practice.
Element 3 for elementary school independent study: [Study Management Skills]

Study management is about discovering the tasks necessary to achieve your goals on your own and preparing the materials to solve them.
Study management is generally like the following.
Set a goal
Identify the tasks needed to reach the goal
Prepare the materials to solve the tasks
Check progress
When to do it? Timing for review, etc.
It is difficult for elementary school students to do all of this.
Or rather, it's difficult even for adults... I think it's enough to just be aware of the goal and handle the tasks right in front of you.
What my eldest daughter is doing ischecking off the number of times she has solved a problem on sticky notes attached to her reference bookwhich she thought of and implemented herself.
