《New NISA 8》 Complete Guide to "Buying US Stocks with New NISA"—From Opening a Securities Account to Your First Purchase, All Completed on a Single Smartphone
For those stuck because they "don't know how to start"
Many people want to "start" the New NISA but are stuck because they don't know the specific steps.
This page is a concrete step-by-step guide to "starting today." With just one smartphone, you can follow this page to proceed with the process.
STEP 1: Choose a securities company (Time required: 5 minutes)
As explained in Episode 3, major online securities companies are recommended for beginners.
Representative options include SBI Securities (the industry leader, largest number of products, point rewards for SBI group card accumulation) and Rakuten Securities (advantageous for Rakuten ecosystem users, point rewards for Rakuten card accumulation, easy-to-understand UI).
If you cannot decide, you can choose Rakuten Securities if you frequently use the Rakuten ecosystem (Rakuten Card, Rakuten Ichiba), or SBI Securities if you do not.
STEP 2: Apply for account opening (Time required: 15–30 minutes)
Download the app of the securities company you chose on your smartphone and tap the "Open Account" button.
Things you need: My Number Card (or Notification Card + Driver's License, etc.), email address, and bank account (for later deposits).
Enter your name, address, date of birth, contact information, etc., into the application form. Take a photo of your identity verification documents (My Number Card, etc.) with your smartphone camera and upload them. Check the box for simultaneous NISA account application (don't forget this). Set the tax-related confirmation items (select "Specific Account" with "Tax Withholding").
After completing the application, you will receive the screening results via email (usually 3–7 business days).
STEP 3: Deposit funds (Time required: 5–10 minutes)
Once you receive the email confirming your account opening, deposit funds into your securities account.
If you use the instant deposit service (via internet banking), the deposit will be reflected in a few minutes. Try starting with a small amount, such as 10,000 yen, to confirm the procedure.
STEP 4: Set up accumulation (Time required: 10–15 minutes)
Open the "Accumulation Settings" menu in the app or on the web.
Select "Accumulation Investment Quota" and search for products. Enter "eMAXIS Slim All Country Equity" or "eMAXIS Slim US Equity (S&P500)" in the search box and select the corresponding product.
Enter the monthly accumulation amount (from a minimum of 100 yen). Set the accumulation date (which day of the month to withdraw). If you are setting up credit card accumulation, register your card information and select "Card Payment".
Confirm the settings and press the "Start Accumulation" button.
That's it. Your automatic investment plan will begin on the designated date of the following month.
STEP 5: Confirmation and Building the Habit of "Leaving It Alone"
Once your investment settings are complete, the correct approach is basically to "leave it alone."
Checking once a month to ensure your investments are being executed normally is sufficient. There is no need to check your account every day. In fact, checking daily is not recommended because it carries the "risk of triggering emotional decisions."
"Set it and forget it" is the secret to maintaining your mental health in long-term investing.

Common Mistakes and How to Handle Them
Mistake 1: Setting it up but forgetting to deposit funds
Even if you set up automatic investing, funds cannot be withdrawn if your securities account balance is zero. You can prevent insufficient funds by utilizing an "automatic sweep" (automatic transfer) service from your bank account to your securities account.
Mistake 2: Setting the investment amount too high
The worst-case scenario is running out of living expenses and having to "cancel your plan." Start with an amount you can comfortably afford to continue.
Mistake 3: Diversifying into too many products
Some beginners set up investments in 5 or 10 mutual funds out of a desire to "diversify." However, a single All-Country (Orkan) fund already provides diversification across over 3,000 companies worldwide. Increasing the number of products does not improve diversification; it only increases the complexity of management.
