Welcome to Ueda, Let’s Talk on Ueda FM. I’m your host, Tedra Ogawa.

Part 1
Today, I want to talk about summer festivals in Ueda and around Japan! Summer is the season for music, dancing, and lively street parades.

First is Ueda Gion, which happened last weekend. This historical festival started back in 1584 to celebrate the building of Ueda Castle. Over 20 local neighborhood groups carry heavy portable shrines, or mikoshi, through central Ueda to pray for good health and safety.

Next, coming up this weekend is Ueda Wasshoi! It is one of the biggest summer events in the area, drawing a lot of out of town visitors too. People form dancing groups called ren and dance through the downtown streets. This year, due to the fundraising efforts of locals, Ueda Wasshoi will once again have live music! Ueda FM will also be out at the festival, so please come find us!

The weekend after Wasshoi, the Maruko area will also host Maruko Dodonko, which is another fun dance festival.

While not an Ueda festival, I had a great experience last weekend joining a unique summer festival. I attended a traditional festival in my husband's hometown in Kazo City, Saitama. They have a special Taiko tradition called Bushu Kazo-bayashi. Musicians play Taiko drums on big parade floats called dashi. When two floats pass each other in the street, the drummers play as loud as they can to compete with each other! At the end, all the floats gather and all play as loud as possible for 20 minutes. I joined playing taiko on the dashi, and it was so powerful and exciting! My ears are still ringing a little though.

Part 2
Let’s move on to our short language corner.

Today, let’s talk about how to explain "Mikoshi" in English.
In English, Mikoshi is usually translated as "portable shrine."
But it is much easier to understand if you add a short explanation:
"It is a wooden shrine carried on shoulders to share good luck!"

Part 3

The cherry blossoms have mostly finished blooming, but today let’s talk about places to see other beautiful blossoms from the end of April to early May.
First, there’s a famous place for peach blossoms in the Takeshi area called Takeshi Yori.
The colors are deep red, bright pink, and pure white. About 2,000 trees grow along a 4-kilometer path.
Takeshi is a little far from central Ueda, but it’s well worth the trip.
Please check out this beautiful mountain-side area of Ueda.
Next, there’s Shinshu Ongakumura. I recently went there to see beautiful yellow daffodils.
In late April, it’s one of the best places to see tulips in the Ueda area.
The colorful red flowers and wooden buildings might make you feel like you’re in the European Alps!
This hilly area between Shioda and Maruko has great views of the mountain ranges around Ueda too.
Last, there’s the wisteria near Shinanokokbunji Station.
This station is just one stop from Ueda station on the Shinano Tetsuo train towards Karuizawa.
The wisteria there is over 120 years old, and creates a beautiful purple curtain.

Part 1
Today, I’m going to talk about Hanami and the best places to see spring flowers in Ueda.
First, what is Hanami? "Hana" means flower, and "mi" means to look.
So, Hanami is a "flower-watching party." While this could be for any flower, when people say "Hanami" they are often talking about having a picnic under the cherry blossoms, or Sakura.
Artistically and philosophically, cherry blossoms symbolize human life. They are beautiful but they don't last long.
Usually, they are in full bloom for only about one week.
They reminds us to enjoy the present moment.
Hanami season is coming soon, so let's talk about some places to do Hanami around Ueda city.
First, the Ueda Castle Ruins Park. This is the most famous spot in our city. There are many types of cherry trees on the castle grounds.
The Ueda Castle Senbon Sakura Festival starts soon.
This year, the festival is from April 4th to April 12th.
There will be many food stalls, and a light up event at night. There are also several events held at the castle or nearby related to the festival. I will be performing at the Ueda Taiko Festival on April 12, so please come out and watch the drumming!
Next is the Yoda River area in Maruko. There is a 500-meter path of cherry trees.
When the flowers are full, it feels like a pink tunnel.
In mid-April, you can also see Koinobori (carp streamers) flying over the river. The combination of pink flowers and colorful carp is very special.
For history lovers, you can also visit the Sanada clan's family temple, Chokokuji, in Sanada area.
They have beautiful weeping cherry trees called shidare-zakura).
One of them hangs over a stone gate with the Sanada "Six Coins" symbol.
Because it is on a hill, the flowers bloom a little later, usually in late April.
Aside from Sakura, there are also daffodils blooming in this season, so keep an eye out for their bright and friendly yellow color.

You may have seen many candidates standing on the street waving, hosting events, and doing other campaign activities.
Ueda FM has also been interviewing these candidates, and you can hear from them on our Youtube channel later this month.
Foreign residents such as myself cannot vote, but hearing candidates talk about what they hope for Ueda’s future has been very exciting.

On March 16th, the Rotou-zakura started blooming behind the museum in the castle park.
These are very light pink flowers. When the Rotou-zakura blooms, the famous Somei Yoshino cherry blossom trees usually start blooming about two weeks later.
If this pattern stays the same, we might see the main cherry blossoms around the end of March.

Part 3

Today, I’m going to talk about special manholes in Ueda City. In Japan, many manhole covers have special pictures that show local history or nature. These are called "Design Manholes."
Ueda City has eight different types of design manholes. They are so beautiful that they are even in junior high school art textbooks. You can find them near the station and at many famous sightseeing spots.
For example, near Ueda Station, the design shows the azalea flower and the old city symbol. If you go to Bessho Onsen, you can see the "Take-no-Nobori" festival. This is a famous rain-making festival with long, colorful banners. In Kakeyu Onsen, the manhole tells a legend about a deer showing a hunter the hot spring.
Of course, the Sanada Clan is also on the ground! In the Sanada area, you can find the "Rokumonsen" coins and the "Sanada Ten Braves" featured on manhole covers. And in Sugadaira Kogen, since it is a famous rugby training area, the design shows Rugby.
Recently, there is a very special new manhole in Unno-machi. It celebrates the 15th anniversary of the movie Summer Wars. It features characters like King Kazma and Kari Kenji. It is located in front of Takaichi Shrine.
When you take photos of these manholes, please be careful. Please watch for cars and do not block the sidewalk. Also, please do not lie down on the ground to take a photo! Let’s enjoy the art at our feet safely.

Welcome to Ueda, Let’s Talk on Ueda FM. I’m your host, Tedra of Quietude. Today we’re coming to you from QT Cha Cafe Kotatsu Studio.
Instead of introducing a place in Ueda today, please let me tell you about some personal news. My wedding was on January 17th! My husband is Japanese, and we did a Japanese style civil ceremony, so there was a combination of cultures. We held it at Otowa in Komoro city, which was a beautiful venue, with excellent staff and amazing food. Most weddings have two parts, the ceremony and the party. In our case, we wore kimono for both parts of the wedding. My husband wore a men’s kimono called nagagi with a hakama - a piece that goes over the bottom half of the kimono for formal occasions. The hakama for weddings has a special striped pattern. He also wore a haori - which is jacket for kimono, a white tassel piece called haori-himo holding the jacket together, and carried a white fan. I wore a white formal wedding kimono with a red over kimono. In this case, all the pieces of the kimono underneath are white, from the obi belt to all the accessories. Over top of that, I wore an elaborately embroidered red over kimono called uchikake which is typically only worn by brides. There were also some traditional accessories such as a fan and case for good luck, although these days they usually don’t contain anything. These days, many brides in Japan wear western-style dresses, or if Japanese style, many wear a white over kimono, both of which are also very beautiful. However, I was happy with my choice to wear a red uchikake. I did, however, follow the Western traditional rhyme of having “something borrowed, something blue, something old, and something new.” We did a secular version of san-san-ku do during the ceremony, which is a traditional Japanese wedding event The bride and groom each drink sake from the same cups in series. These symbolize the vows or promises of the couple to each other. Of course, we did also read vows to each other after that, he did his in English and I did mine in Japanese. I was very nervous! But it went pretty well. Western-style vows are longer than typical Japanese vows, usually each partner reads a short 1-2 minute speech to the other, saying why they like that person, and what they promise to the other person. After that, we had the party! We enjoyed amazing food with our friends and family. The food was a combination of Japanese and French cooking. We had dishes such as smoked salmon and cream cheese crepe, uni sea urchin flan, sea bream fish with Kurakake beans, Japanese beef, an eel rice bowl, and cake. We also had a fun event where we colored the eyes in on a Daruma cake. After the wedding, I was super tired from wearing such a heavy kimono, but I have no regrets at all. It was so fun to enjoy time with friends and family together.

Today, I’m going to talk about not a place, but a local product, Ueda Tsumugi Silk.
Ueda Tsumugi is a traditional silk textile made in Ueda City, Nagano.
Ueda Tsumugi is known as one of Japan’s Three Great Tsumugi, together with: Oshima Tsumugi from Amami Oshima island, and Yuki Tsumugi from Ibaraki prefecture.
It has a history of about 400 years.
Ueda Tsumugi began when the Sanada clan ruled Ueda.Sanada Masayuki encouraged silk weaving as a local industry.
Ueda was a good place for silk because of its climate and nature. Many farmers raised silkworms and made cloth for their families.
One of my good friends lives in an over 100 year old house that originally raised silk worms on the second floor.
Ueda Tsumugi became popular in Edo and Kyoto during the Edo period.
It was light, strong, and easy to wear.
Many Ueda Tsumugi fabrics are hand woven.
Hand-woven, natural fabric becomes softer the more you wear it, and fits the body better over time.
The Ueda tradition is still protected by local artisans using traditional techniques.
There are two main places to directly see Ueda Tsumugi woven in Ueda, at the Koiwai Tsumugi Workshop, and Fujimoto Shioda Shop.
Weaving is done mainly in this winter season from November to February, so it’s a good time to experience Ueda Tsumugi.
You can also purchase many Ueda Tsumugi products at local shops around Ueda.
I myself have had a beautiful business card holder made from Ueda Tsumugi for about 8 years.
The characteristic strip pattern is very beautiful.
I highly recommend Ueda Tsumugi as an elegant gift for friends and family.

Ueda City has set up a wildlife damage response to protect people when bears or other wild animals appear in living areas.
Bear sightings have increased this year, so the city will share information with residents and take different actions depending on the danger level.

In recent years, new shops have brought fresh energy to the area. One of them is Sai no Tsuno, a unique space that includes a small theater, a café, and a guesthouse.People come to enjoy performances, take a break with a drink, or meet the local community. It has become a cultural spot for both visitors and residents.
There are also casual places to eat, such as Today’s Banh Mi, which sells Vietnamese sandwiches, and up moat, where you can enjoy a relaxed meal or drink.Shops like these have made Unnomachi a lively place to walk and explore.

Welcome to Ueda, Let’s Talk on Ueda FM. I’m your host, Tedra of Quietude. Last weekend, I rode the Bessho train, and then transferred at Ueda station to go to Myoko. While I drive a car daily, my house is near the Bessho line and it’s great that Ueda city has this type of train service. So, today, I’d like to talk about Ueda Dentetsu’s Bessho Line. Many people might first recognize the Bessho Line from its iconic red truss bridge crossing the Chikuma River. This bridge is a major feature of Ueda city and looks great in photographs. But have you tried riding the Bessho line train? The Bessho Line is a small electric railway in Ueda City, from Ueda Station to Bessho Onsen Station. The distance is 11.6 km, and there are 15 stations. It’s easy, local, and very useful! There are many Ueda sites along the Bessho line, for example Nagano University, Ikushimatarushima Shrine, and the Bessho Onsen area. The line gives easy access to areas on the south-west side of the Chikuma River. Let’s learn about the history of this train line. It was opened in 1921, over 100 years ago! In the 1970’s it almost closed, but was saved by the support of local residents. In 2019, the red bridge collapsed due to a typhoon. In 2021, the bridge was repaired. This year, there are more trains running during the day, making it more convenient. This train line is not part of any larger rail company, so riding this train directly supports an Ueda local business. Next, let’s learn how to ride this train. It’s a little different from some of the other train lines. This is a one-man car, so at many stations, the train driver also takes tickets. If you get on or off the train somewhere other than Ueda station, Shimonogo Station, and Bessho Station, you will put your ticket in the box at the front of the train before getting off. You can also use the Ticket QR app to ride. Using the app, you can buy tickets in advance, or scan the app when you get on the train and pay when you get off. Right now, Kitamuki Kanon and Joraku-ji Temple in Bessho Onsen are celebrating 1200 years with various events. If you go there, why not take a ride the Bessho line? Let’s move on to local news. Central Ueda hosted the 43rd Sanada Festival with a warrior parade, mikoshi procession, folk dancing, and Edo-style Kappore. At City Hall, the Tokida Shishi dance was performed, and 84 taiko drummers played “Ueda Castle.” About 200 armor-clad participants marched through the city after an “departure” ceremony. A battle play of the Osaka Winter Campaign and a matchlock gun show closed the event. The Hachijūni Bank Kamishina Branch donated food items collected in a food drive to the Ueda City Council of Social Welfare. Staff brought items from home between July 1 and Aug 31, including seaweed, snacks, tea, soups, canned foods, drinks, and plum paste. A handover ceremony was held at the Fureai Welfare Center. The branch plans to continue food drives and PET bottle collection. The Great Ueda Region Union had a meeting October 14th and reported a budget surplus. They have improved local systems this year. There are now 8 hospitals offering emergency services. They also proposed laws to help prevent fires. Last, the Ueda Weekend Guide corner. Search “Ueda Weekend Guide” to find the Japanese site for local events. I’ll highlight a few events coming in the next month. From now until November 9th, Kitamuki Kanon and Joraku-ji Temple will be celebrating their 1200th anniversaries. Kitamuki Kanon will also be hosting a gokaicho event, where they show the Maedachi Hoson, a special image of the Buddha, publicly for the first time in 64 years. The image can be seen daily between 9 am and 4 pm. At the end of the event on November 9th at 6pm, there will be a special event with a guest priest. Please take the Bessho line train there if you have time! 2)ミライフェスin Ueda 2025 Oct 31–Nov 1 (with museum exhibits until Nov 16), the Sangyou Mirai Festival will be held at Santomuze. Today, let’s talk about Ueda Castle. Ueda Castle is a very special place in our city. It was built in the 16th century by the Sanada samurai family. The castle is still famous in Japanese history for defending against the Tokugawa army twice. Now, the main keep of the castle is gone, but the East Gate, some turrets and walls, and the Sanada Shrine remain. The park is also a beautiful place to enjoy nature. You can often see people walking there. There is a museum that has a lot of information about the castle’s history. Many events happen at Ueda Castle Park. In spring, we have the 1000 Sakura Festival. In autumn, we have the Autumn Leaves Festival. We also have the Ueda Sanada Festival which will be in October. People wear samurai costumes and there is a parade. There are many other events such as the Ueda Taiko Festival, Noh plays, and music festivals. The castle park is very close to Ueda station, only 12 minutes on foot. Or, you can go by car or bicycle. We are lucky to have a beautiful place like Ueda Castle Park in our city. I hope you enjoy it!
Let’s move on to local news. Until August 31st, there is a great exhibition at Santomyuze Art Museum. The exhibition is called 魔法の美術館, or “Art in Wonderland”. There are exhibits using projection, lights, and shadow. The last day is this Sunday, so check it out! Tickets are 1,200 yen on weekdays, and 1,300 yen on weekends. In local sports, all 3 age groups of the Ueda Minami League baseball team qualified for the national baseball tournament. While the Minors and Seniors teams have already finished their national tournaments, the Majors will join the national invitational tournament from August 29. Let’s cheer them on. In more sad news, there have been some fires recently around Ueda city, such as Monday at an apartment building near Route 18, or last week near Oya. Let’s review some fire safety tips. It’s hot, so be careful about having air conditioners, fans, or other appliances on at the same time. Make sure to unplug anything you aren’t using. Be careful about barbeques, cigarettes, or other fires. Make sure they are completely put out and thrown away properly. The emergency number for fire and ambulances is 119. Let’s all try to be careful about fire safety in this hot weather.
Last, the Ueda Weekend Guide corner. Search “Ueda Weekend Guide” to find the Japanese site for local events. I’ll highlight a few events. There are a lot of events coming this weekend. Saturday, August 30th, in Central Ueda there will be a Summer Festival in Yanagimachi from 5-8pm. There will be a performance by Goropika, which is a combination of Taiko drumming and fire. Sounds very cool. On Saturday and Sunday, there will be an Ueda Jazz Festival at and around Restaurant Shibazaki near Unnomachi.
