Can you make popcorn in the microwave?
This time, I actually tried it out using a microwave cooker instead of a 100-yen shop gadget.
An experimental record of failures and successes in making snacks that kids love.
Both kids came home together as usual, and the younger one was sluggishly doing homework while half-asleep 📝
As soon as the homework was finished, they suddenly regained their energy! 🦸
The younger one said,
“Dad, I want to make popcorn! 🌽”
Huh? 🤨
And so, just like yesterday...
The younger one's impossible request exploded! 😅
Ah... they must have discovered that thing I bought back when we had a gas stove and left sitting around ever since... 😩
“Since we can't use fire... I'm not sure if it'll work, but shall we try making it together?”
The younger one:
“Yay! 🙌”
Right after that, the younger one started worrying about yesterday's RC car 🚁
and was taking it apart.
Wait? 🤔 Does that mean I'm the one who has to make the popcorn 🌽?
When I asked the younger one, they were busy peeling off small parts and absorbed in checking the inside 🥸.
“Hey! What are we doing? Popcorn 🌽!”
“Oh! Dad, please make it! 🥸👨🍳”
What?! ... 😩🥲
Can't be helped! Let's do this! 🦸👊
I told the kid there was a “high chance‼️” it wouldn't work, and headed to the kitchen! Hyah! 🦸
In the microwave cooker, I put this ↓
Coated it with oil,
Preheat
600W 3 minutes
It only reached 55°C, so,
600W 5 minutes
It reached 99°C, so,
Added the ingredients, coated the corn with oil,
600W 8 minutes
Around 2 minutes and 30 seconds in, I started hearing the sound of popcorn popping 💥!
This is it! I knew it was done! 😁
Around the 4-minute mark, it started popping continuously!
Around 7 minutes, it started smelling delicious 🌽~
8 minutes, ding! All done 👨🍳✨
Whoa! It's overflowing!
Actually, it's still popping away from the residual heat 💥, so I'll leave it for about 3 minutes.
Whoa! 😳 Amazing!! 😲 A mountain of popcorn is finished 😆
The kids are devouring it~ 😆
Looks like the bottom got a bit burnt... 💦 Maybe I should have mixed it in between instead of going full power for 8 minutes...
Turns out there was too much, so they're saving it in a bag to eat tomorrow 😊.
Wait? There are still some unpopped kernels left 👀.
Let's try again, will these turn into popcorn 🌽? Experiment time 😁👨🍳.
School is tomorrow, I haven't even cooked the rice yet, and... I'm out of time, so how about 8 minutes without preheating 🤔? Alright! It definitely burnt again 😂
Future improvements: 1) Mix it once at 4 minutes, then do another 4 minutes. 2) It's better to sprinkle some salt for flavor before microwaving.
Microwave popcorn, it was actually pretty good. Next time, I'll nail the mixing timing and aim even higher. The dad's microwave experiments continue 🦸.
