This is a rough project where I use a random number generator to pick one book from the approximately 6,000 I have on hand to read, and while I'm at it, think about whether it could be used in a novel. Sometimes I also choose them arbitrarily.

Looking at the cover, it says, "If you understand the principles and mechanisms, you can even make things like this yourself," but since the examples given are modified electric vehicles, robots, Buddhist statues, and eyeglass frames, I'm not quite sure what level this is talking about... However, the way it's written assumes a general adult, so it's based on the premise that you don't need special skills like welding or deep knowledge, right... If I were to read a book like this, it would mainly be to find technology I could use if I were reincarnated into another world, but would these things be possible with the technology of medieval Narou-style fantasy worlds?

I'll read the introduction.
Animals like beavers also make things (dams), and humans have instinctively continued to make things throughout history. However, nowadays we use products provided cheaply, and the instinct to make things is dying out. In the past, handmade meant a father's DIY project or a mother's handicraft, but today, you can make an astonishingly wide variety of things yourself. The charm of handmade is its one-of-a-kind originality, and this book collects modern-style handmade projects.
The table of contents includes "Making it Yourself" with modified electric vehicles, Raspberry Pi (not the cake, but the so-called RasPi), eyeglass frames, pinhole cameras, LINE stickers, iPhone apps, smokers, prosciutto, miso, oven ceramics, perfume, salt, and cardboard movie theaters; "Making with Order Kits" with dome houses, electric guitars, speakers, analog synthesizers, Buddhist statues, lampwork beads, and planetariums; and "Making Things to Protect Life" with solar systems, wind power generation, and drinking water.
Oh... since it uses kits and such, you might need home center skills in another world. Looking at the introduction, it denies mass production at first, but the fact that you end up preparing a kit makes me feel like it's just an extension of selling your soul to capital, but on the other hand, the question of how much of the making process should be done by hand is a separate issue. I'll try to think about things that can be made without receiving standard materials as much as possible (things that can be procured locally).
I plan to read about 'smokers,' 'prosciutto,' 'miso,' 'salt,' 'Buddhist statues,' 'wind power generation,' and 'drinking water.' I'm not sure about the direction of the Buddhist statues, but I know the principles of each of these. I'm not sure if wind power generation can be made by an individual, but we live in an age where scholars stick electrodes into the dirt to generate electricity... That's ion movement, though.

About 'Smokers'
In the Stone Age, meat roasted over a bonfire would be accidentally smoked if left as is, which reduced moisture and fat, making it easier to eat and less prone to rotting. Thus, smoking began over 10,000 years ago, and the smoking method was established in combination with salting and the technique of using spices to remove odors. The aroma and color change depending on the chips used. The book introduces how to make a smoker using cardboard and a net from a home center, and a smoker using a one-to-can.
Honestly, I have made both the cardboard and one-to-can versions. Thinking about how to make one in another world, you could probably make the cover out of bricks. If you have metal skewers, you might be able to combine them to make a net. As for the taste, it depends largely on the aroma of the chips. So, the premise is to make chips by shaving wood found locally in the other world, but that would require research. There are often trees with strange smells or poisonous trees. It's risky to assume that just the right dry wood is lying around, so I feel it's better to shave and dry it in advance. Burning raw wood is the worst. Thinking about it that way, if salt is cheap and easy to get, salting seems the easiest (where did the smoking go?).
About 'Prosciutto'
Prosciutto is pork that has been salted and smoked, or dried with salt without smoking. It began to be made 9,000 years ago when livestock farming started. Winter is the best time to make it in Japan. First, put the pork in a Ziploc bag with curing liquid and let it rest in the refrigerator for seven days. Desalt it for about 10 hours, dry it in the wind for a full day, smoke it, and then dry it in the wind for three months.
Basically, it starts with the vibe of easy cooking, assuming you have a refrigerator and curing liquid (salt water mixed with spices, sugar, etc.), but there is also a dry-curing method that doesn't use liquid, unlike the wet-curing method. In the dry-curing method not mentioned here, you manually rub the ingredients, so you don't have to make salt water, but the pickling becomes uneven. If you can create a place where the wind passes through in a cool area, you might be able to manage it. I have a feeling that what this book assumes is dried meat that is delicious to eat (like bacon), not the kind of rock-hard, completely dried meat that you have to chew on for preservation. Also, I think ham products sold in supermarkets aren't actually ham because they don't use salt, but instead inject sorbitol liquid to skip the amino acid fermentation process and infuse the flavor.
About 'Miso'
Miso is a representative fermented food made by adding salt and koji to grains such as soybeans, rice, or barley and fermenting them. It has existed for 1,300 years; initially, it was used as a condiment or licked as is, and from the Kamakura period, it began to be drunk as miso soup. In the Honcho Shokkan, it is evaluated as a health food. Introducing the method from the Marukawa Miso website: wash the soybeans, soak them in three times the amount of water for 18 hours, and then boil them until they can be crushed with light pressure between your thumb and pinky. Crush the boiled soybeans, mix with salt and koji, roll into balls, and pack into a fermentation container. Wooden barrels are suitable because bacteria live in them. To prevent contact with air, cover with a drop cloth, plastic wrap, or an inner lid, and let it rest for 10 months to a year.
I don't dislike the double standard of saying that each household develops its own personality while pulling a uniform way of making miso from a company to teach. Now, my problem is how to make miso in another world. There would be several stages to that. Even assuming an environment similar to Earth, if the concept of fermentation doesn't exist much in that other world, you would have to start by identifying harmless bacteria. If there are livestock that produce milk, cheese probably exists naturally, so if bacteria similar to lactic acid bacteria exist in that world, you could make pickled grains. If you can make yeast and perform sugar fermentation, you might be able to make alcohol. What makes Japanese miso and sake is mainly yellow koji mold, while the awamori used in Okinawa uses white koji mold or black koji mold. Yes, that's the problem; it's whether the same bacteria exist in the first place. I think making miso is seriously high difficulty.
About 'Salt'
60% of the world's salt is rock salt, but in Japan, it is all taken from the sea. Draw seawater, filter it with paper towels or coffee filters, boil it in a pot until it becomes cloudy and reduced to about half, then cool it down and filter it again. Boil it down again over medium heat, and when it reaches one-tenth of the original amount, filter it again, then bake it in a frying pan or dry it in the sun.
I know the salt field method, so that's fine, but it's tough if you're not near the sea. Now, modern salt production uses ion-exchange membranes to electrically concentrate seawater, so almost all mineral components other than sodium chloride are removed. Because of this, while it can be produced cheaply, the taste is simple. However, the act of 'bringing seawater from the sea,' which is the premise, is quite difficult depending on your home's location, so it's a lot of trouble to try it... when you go near the sea.
On "Buddhist Statues"
Since a Buddhist sculptor introduces how to carve a Jizo statue in a free video, first buy the Buddhist statue carving starter kit sold by the sculptor on their website! Make a paper pattern for the design and draw the outline with a pencil. After carving out the outline from the front with a chisel, carve out the outline from the side. Carve out the ears, face, and feet, and finally the eyes, nose, and mouth.
Wouldn't watching the free video be enough for this? Basically, there are no tips on how to do things, and the instructions are written under the assumption that you will watch the video, saying things like 'let's carve as the sculptor moves the chisel,' so honestly, I don't think there's a need to turn a kit product into a book. It's like saying 'just look at the manual.' In another world, if you had soft wood, you could surely carve it, but there would be professional carvers, and things carved by an amateur might be meaningless. Unless you have the ability to create a golem.
On "Wind Power Generation"
Wind power turns a windmill, and that power generates electricity. Large-scale wind power generation uses a speed-up gear to increase the rotation speed because the blades move slowly. There are various types of windmills. In Japan, there are issues such as typhoons (stopping at wind speeds of 25 m/s or more), the need for towers (high places), noisy motors, and high costs for wind in residential areas, but that's where the wind power generation kit comes in. You assemble it like this. It might be useful in an emergency.
I want to use wind as a power source, but relying entirely on kits is... well, aside from the parts powered by wind, the motors and transmission lines are provided based on the assumption of current technology. Infrastructure is quite difficult, isn't it?
On "Drinking Water"
First, you should stockpile water, but if you run out, you filter it. Cut the bottom off a plastic bottle with a cap, turn it upside down, fill it with cloth, small stones, charcoal, and sand in that order, make a small hole in the cap, and pour rainwater or similar from the top to filter it. If it's very dirty, repeat the process. Other than that, there are ways to make drinking water from seawater, and realistically, I recommend buying a portable water purifier.
Basically, this is the most fundamental method taught for filtration. Hey, include the boiling process. Regardless of whether you have a place to prepare a fire, if you are going to drink it, you should basically include a boiling process. Even if drinking water is clear, contamination by pathogens, toxins, etc., cannot be avoided. At the very least, boiling it can reduce pathogens to a drinkable level. Also, instead of filtering it many times, wouldn't it be better to just line up these plastic bottle filters vertically?
Summary
Overall, I think this is a DIY book that leaves no room for thought or creativity. It aims for DIY that doesn't fail or go wrong in the modern age, and it's a book where you basically gather all the necessary tools and just move your hands a little. Basically, everything written here (except for things like Raspberry Pi or LINE) is something I know as knowledge, and some of it I have tried before, but it might be interesting for people who don't know the basics of making things. To gain learning and understanding from it, I think you should originally start from simpler experimental things, but this book skips that process and is a book for entertainment aimed at having something completed by doing exactly as it says without using your head. I think it's far from creativity, but it might be good for people who want to do a little DIY on a Sunday. I don't mean to bash it, it's just that the purpose is different; I'm the type who would rather experiment and output my own unique standards, so the intent was a bit different.
As for whether it can be used in a novel, I think it could be used if you have a modern family drama where you make them do some DIY, but that's about it. It's impossible in another world.
4. Conclusion
Come to think of it, this is 100, but I accidentally skipped one number, so this is the 99th book. The first episode is the table of contents.
It feels incredibly airy. And it made me think again about what the process of making things is. After all, humans make things because there is a need. And that perspective of 'when it is necessary' is decisively lacking, and there is a strong feeling of being danced by capitalism. I think the author probably doesn't realize that they are structurally double-standard.
