[AI Side Hustle] I hit a wall making thumbnails, so I made AI my client
"Would a flashy color be better?"
"Would it be better if it looked more like Claude?"
This is a story about when I finished creating a Udemy course
and was making the thumbnail
together with AI at the very end.
I tried changing the background color,
tried making the icon bigger,
and even took the plunge and remade the whole thing.
I came up with ideas and fixed them,
then came up with more and fixed those too.
While repeating this process,
💭 "Wait, I have no idea what's good anymore."
I had completely hit a wall 😅
That's when it suddenly hit me.
Where exactly does my course
catch the customer's eye in the first place?
It's in the list of Udemy search results, right?
In other words, my thumbnail
isn't being looked at carefully on its own,
it's being chosen while lined up with other coursesinstead.
If that's the case,
why not just line up my course in that marketplace
and think about it in terms of
"would people want to choose this?"
That's what I thought.
The method is simple.
First, take a screenshot
of the course search results screen.
I gave that to the AI and asked,
"Please create a screen where my course
is also lined up in this list."
Then the AI
created a list screen
that looked exactly like the real thing.
My course was casually lined up
among the competitor courses,
and it even reproduced the star ratings and prices.
Just by looking at this screen,
my perspective shifts to
"Is this how it looks to the customer?"
Then, I show that screen to the AI
that I had act as a potential customer,
which I introduced in a previous article.
"Which course would you choose from these?"
I just ask that.
Once I lined them up, I could see it.
First, once the list screen was created,
I realized something myself.
On a smartphone search list,
only the center part of the thumbnail
is displayed.
Since I was using the entire screen
to place icons in my thumbnails,
the crucial parts were cut off on smartphones,
making it impossible to tell at a glance what the course was💦
When I was looking at them individually,
I hadn't noticed at all.
When I showed the revised version
to the AI acting as a potential customer,
"This course stands out properly."
It gave me a not-so-bad evaluation.
💭 "Alright, I can move forward with this!"
The time I spent endlessly tinkering with thumbnails
ended right there.
How I often use it
Like this,
when I can no longer judge for myself,
I have the AI look at it objectively.
I often use it this way.
There is only one trick.
Do not have the AI that helped you make the thumbnail
evaluate it.
The partner who has been making them with me all along
already has the eyes of a creator,
so I show them to a different AI that knows nothing.
A creator's eyes
only see their own work.
But a customer's eyes
are looking at the entire marketplace.
I can't say yet
whether this will lead to good results.
However, when you're stuck,
I think it's a good way to use AI
as a trigger to take the next step.😊
This is the same for
note thumbnails or Kindle covers.
Just take a screenshot of the list view and your own draft,
give it to the chat AI,
and ask it to 'show them side by side'.
When you feel like
'I don't know what's good anymore',
please give it a try.
