SunM Color employee to speak at the June 22nd talk event 'What is "Photography"?' commemorating the publication of "History of Japanese Photography: Photography Magazines 1874-1985"

A talk event commemorating the publication of the book "History of Japanese Photography: Photography Magazines 1874-1985", published by Heibonsha, will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at Keibunsha Ichijoji Store Cottage.

The speakers will be Masako Toda (Photography Historian), Akihito Yoshida (Photographer / Three Books), and Masataka Ohata (SunM Color Co., Ltd.).

"History of Japanese Photography: Photography Magazines 1874-1985" is a volume that covers the history of photography in Japan, compiled over more than 10 years.

In this event, along with the history of photography and photography magazines, we will look at some of the actual collected materials while touching on topics such as "pre-war modernism," "photography and literature," and "landscape theory," which are Masako Toda's areas of expertise.

Masataka Ohata of SunM Color Co., Ltd., who will be speaking at this event, plans to talk about printing related to photography.

Speaker Profiles

Masako Toda
Photography historian. Completed doctoral coursework in Cultural Resource Studies at the University of Tokyo. Teaches photography history at Musashino Art University and Tokyo College of Photography. Exhibition collaborator for "The World of Phantom Modernist Masao Horino" (Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, 2012), "Akihiko Okamura's Photography: Everything About Living and Dying" (same, 2014), and others. Supervisor for "Akihiko Okamura's Words and Photography: What Kind of Era Are We Living In Now?" (Akakasha, 2020), "Hisae Imai" (Akakasha, 2022), and co-author of "Japanese Photography Magazines 1880-1980" (Goliga, 2022), among others.

Masataka Ohata (SunM Color Co., Ltd.)
Printing Director. In addition to photo books and exhibition catalogs, he also handles print direction for art works and cultural property reproductions. He also serves as a technician for digital archiving using large-format scanners and quality control for printing.

Akihito Yoshida
Born in Miyazaki Prefecture in 1980. Resides in Kyoto. After graduating from the Faculty of Education at Shiga University, he worked as a Japanese language teacher in Thailand for one year, and after returning to Japan, worked as an elementary school teacher for six years. Started working as a photographer in 2010. Launched the photo book publishing label "Three Books" in 2023. Photo books include "Brick Yard," "Tannery," "The Absence of Two," "The Dialogue of Two," and "The Screw." He also has a book summarizing his 10 years as a photographer titled "Shanimuni Shashinka" (Akishobo). Numerous exhibitions in Japan and abroad, and many awards and nominations for photography and photo book prizes. In 2023, he was nominated for the Images Vevey Book Award (Switzerland) and the 47th Kimura Ihei Photography Award.
