Before I knew it, I had two houses
Perhaps people think we had a mid-life divorce.
My husband was apparently asked by a colleague,
Is your wife doing well?
he said.
They must have noticed that my car, which used to be in the company housing parking lot, hasn't been there lately.
When my husband's retirement was approaching, we started looking for a place to live in our later years.
We had heard that it would be difficult to sign a lease once he was no longer a company employee.
When we went to a real estate agent, we found that this was indeed the case.
Even if you apply, you sometimes get turned down.
Still, we finally found an apartment we both liked, passed the screening, and managed to sign the contract.
Moving preparations went smoothly.
We even set a date.
However, at that time, an unexpected offer came from my husband's company.
They wanted us to continue living in the company housing because they would rehire him after his retirement.
We had already signed the lease and paid the initial costs.
I really wanted to try living in that new house.
I had fallen in love with the view from the window, which looked out over the mountains and a park.
Since we had already paid the rent, I decided to live there for that period.
For the time being, I bought a refrigerator and a microwave.
After work, I would go to that apartment.
I would enjoy the view from the window, and then go home.
I also bought a dining table.
It became even more comfortable.
Once I bought a bed and a television, I no longer felt like returning to our original home.
My husband stayed in the company housing, and
I moved into the new house.
On weekdays, we live near our respective workplaces, and my husband comes to my house only on weekends.
The houses are in the same city, about a 20-minute drive apart.
……I feel like they are too close to be called a two-base lifestyle.
And so, before I knew it, we had become a weekend-marriage couple.
We were supposed to spend more time together in our old age.
For some reason, the distance between us has become just right.
I also write about the distance between family members here.
It has a slightly different atmosphere, but please take a look if you like.
“This much distance is just right for family”
