Puku of the Quiet Shop: A morning where I still haven't handed over the Mother's Day box | L'Occitane hand cream gift
As May approaches, the number of floral paper bags
in the hands of people walking in front of the shop increases.
Carnations.
Boxes of baked goods.
Small packages.
That's how I realize every year
that Mother's Day is near.

My shop is the same as always.
On the shelves are picture books, small bowls, and wooden trays.
Almost the same lineup as yesterday
is neatly arranged again today.
Even though they haven't sold, they are tidy.
I wonder if that is really
how a shop should be.
Puku was on the chair by the window.
With front paws together,
he is looking outside.
Cats have it easy.
They don't have to worry
about Mother's Day gifts.

I was wondering what to do
for Mother's Day this year.
Flowers are beautiful.
Sweets are nice.
Tea is also good.
But this year,
I thought it would be nice to give something
that she would be reminded of me a little every time she uses it.
I placed a small box
on the counter.
It is a L'Occitane Mother's Day gift.
Rose and Lavande Blanche.
It contains hand creams in two scents.
It comes with a spring-like pouch
and a paper bag to use when giving it.
The rose one
is said to have the scent of flowers picked in the morning.
The other one
has a clean scent,
like freshly washed linen.
Southern France.
Provence.
A garden.
The wind.
Roses.
It is quite a distance
from the reality of my shop.
Here, I am just counting the coins in the register
and gently brushing Puku's fur off the shelves.
But I feel it's okay to borrow a slightly distant view
at least when choosing a gift.

Puku brought his nose close
to the handle of the paper bag placed next to the box.
His whiskerstremble just a little.
"That isn't for you, Puku."
When I said that,
Puku, with a face that suggested he hadn't heard a thing,
sat down next to the box.
He looks
much more imposing than the box.

I remembered my mother's hands.
Hands standing in the kitchen.
Hands carrying shopping bags.
Hands folding laundry.
When asked what to give for Mother's Day,
every year, I lose sight of the right answer.
But I felt that something to care for her hands
wouldn't be too far off the mark.

Hand cream
is not a grand gift.
But I felt that such lightness
is just right for Mother's Day.
"Thank you for everything."
Saying that
still makes me a little shy.
I think I should just say it.
Yet, without being able to say it,
I am choosing a box.
Humans are quite complicated.
For those who are curious about the same box,
I will leave it here quietly.
I think L'Occitane's "Rose & Lavande Blanche Hand Cream Gift"
is a set that is easy to choose for Mother's Day.
Rose and Lavande Blanche hand creams.
It comes with a spring-like pouch and a paper bag for giving.
On days when it's a bit embarrassing to say thank you,
having a box like this is a big help.
In the evening, Puku climbed down from the chair and
meowed just once by the register.
It was probably for dinner.

Before Mother's Day,
dinner comes first.
That, too,
was a typical day at our shop.
