Puku at the Quiet Goods Store: The Day I Chose a ReFa AILE BRUSH RAY as a Gift
When spring arrives, I get more requests for gift advice.
Around the time we start hearing talk of cherry blossoms,
it's strange how the number of people who "want to give something to someone" suddenly increases.
As I wiped the small mirror by the register,
I thought to myself that today would probably be one of those days.
Puku was curled up on the chair by the window,
looking as if he knew nothing of my premonition.

Just then, a lady from the neighborhood came in.
"Hello. Today, I know exactly what I'm here to buy."
On days when people say it like that, they usually don't have anything decided.
The lady didn't go to the back of the shop, but stopped right at the entrance.
"A gift. Something proper.
But something not too heavy."
"I see. That's the most difficult kind."
"Right? My head is already tired."
When I asked who it was for, the lady paused for a moment,
"A senior colleague at work.
Lately, she's someone who... is very good at pretending to be fine."
she said.
With those words, the gift became more than just an object.

I guided her to the glass display case and traced a few candidates with my finger.
A handkerchief.
A small pouch.
A hand cream that isn't too strongly scented.
The lady nodded, but she had a look on her face that said none of them were quite right.
"Well, they're nice, but..."
When she says "they're nice, but..." like that, it usually means either
"It doesn't feel like them," or
"I feel like my sentiment isn't quite enough."
I looked up at the top shelf of the glass cabinet and
remembered the ReFa AILE BRUSH RAY.
It's beautiful, practical, and yet, it doesn't feel like you're trying too hard.
To be honest, this kind of consultation is what I'm worst at.
Because "not too heavy, but thoughtful" is the hardest thing to get right.
"How about this?"
When I held it out, the lady was silent for a beat before she smiled.
"Oh, something like this. This is it."

The lady picked up the brush and tilted it slightly in the light.
"It's beautiful."
"It is. And it detangles the hair, and finally, it gives it a polished shine.
The final shine is thanks to the boar bristles picking it up."
"Hmm."
The lady looked at the brush once more and said quietly,
"People who are tired, it shows in their hair, doesn't it?"
That remark was the core of it all today.
I just nodded.
If I nodded too much, I would only find more things that hit close to home.

Puku didn't participate in the conversation at all, remaining on the chair with his front paws tucked in.
"You're lucky. You groom yourself properly every single day."
When the lady spoke to him, Puku ignored her.
Cats don't need a reason to groom themselves.
Humans need to line up reasons before they groom.
That difference stung a little today.
The lady looked at the brush, paused as if searching for words, and then said quietly.
"…It's not 'do your best.' That's not what I want to say."
She thought for a moment, then gave a small smile.
"……Maybe it's 'don't be careless with yourself.'"
The way she said it was wonderful.
'Become beautiful' feels a bit heavy.
But 'don't be careless' feels gentle.
I said as I gently returned the brush to its stand.
"This will probably serve as a substitute for those words."

The lady said without a moment's hesitation.
“Well then, I’ll take this one.”
I spread out the wrapping paper.
On a quiet day at the shop, the sound of wrapping paper echoes clearly.
The soft rustling sound reaches all the way to the back of the store.
Puku turned one ear toward that sound alone.
He doesn't help with customers, but he is sensitive to changes in sound.

“What will you say when you give it to them?”
When I asked, the lady smiled with a troubled look.
“I can’t say it. It’s embarrassing.”
“Then, you don’t have to say anything.”
The lady’s eyes widened for a moment, and then she let out a soft sigh.
“That’s true. Maybe it’s more like me not to say anything.”
When I handed her the paper bag, she held it in front of her chest, looking as if she were thinking,
“It’s not heavy, but it feels substantial.”
Seeing that look makes it all worthwhile for a shopkeeper.

The door bell rang, and a thin stream of spring air drifted in.
One brush is gone from the top of the register, leaving a small empty space there.
A few days later, a short message arrived from the wife.
“When I gave it to them, they smiled. …That was enough.”
Beyond the glass at the entrance, the spring light was moving slowly.
Today's gift is this.
