Scientific Notes on the Cosmic Epic, Part 3: The Fine-Tuning Problem of the Universe
Released on April 13th, in conjunction with "Epic of the Universe's Birth Chapter 2 Birth of the Universe Section 1 and Section 2"
In the universe, there are fundamental forces that determine the behavior of matter and energy.
In current physics, these are classified into four types.
• Strong interaction (strong force)
• Weak interaction (weak force)
• Electromagnetic interaction (electromagnetic force)
• Gravity
Each of these forces has a specific strength, and the structure of the universe is determined by their combination.
If these strengths were even slightly different from what they are now, the universe could have taken on a completely different form.
First, the strong interaction is the force that binds quarks together to create protons and neutrons, and further binds protons and neutrons together to create atomic nuclei.
If this force were too weak, protons and neutrons could not bind, and atomic nuclei would not form.
If it were even weaker, protons and neutrons themselves would not be born.
Conversely, if it were too strong, it is thought that the universe would have had an elemental composition significantly different from the current one.
Next, the weak interaction is the force involved in radioactive decay and nuclear reactions inside stars.
If the strength of this force were different, the process of nuclear reactions occurring inside stars would change, and the types and proportions of elements existing in the universe could have changed significantly.
The electromagnetic interaction is the force that binds electrons and atomic nuclei together to create atoms.
If this force were different from what it is now, the structure of atoms and chemical bonds might not have formed or would have been completely different.
As a result, the molecules and chemical reactions seen in the current universe might not have been able to exist.
And gravity is the force that shapes the large-scale structure of the universe.
If the strength of this force were different, the formation process of stars and galaxies could have been significantly different from what it is now.
It is believed that if gravity were too strong, the universe would have contracted rapidly, and if it were too weak, stars and galaxies would hardly have formed at all.
Thus, if the strengths of the fundamental forces of the universe were even slightly different, the current universe might not have been able to exist.
Therefore, the universe appears to be built upon very delicate conditions that allow life to exist.
This problem is called the fine-tuning problem of the universe.
Several ideas have been proposed regarding how to understand this phenomenon.
These include the idea that these values happened by chance, the anthropic principle which states that only a universe where observers can exist is observed, or the multiverse hypothesis which suggests that countless universes exist and this is merely one of them.
However, at present, no definitive explanation for this problem has been obtained.
The question of why the fundamental constants of the universe have these specific values is one of the important mysteries remaining in modern cosmology.
In "Epic of the Universe's Birth," the beginning of the universe is depicted with the concept of an "ocean of information."
It considers that countless possibilities existed as descriptions, and one of those structures became reality, giving birth to the universe.
If the fundamental constants of the universe are important conditions that determine the structure of the universe,
perhaps they, too, were part of the "description" that determined the formation of the universe.
