My Approach to Work

What I decided 10 years ago

Ten years ago, I decided that I would not move in a direction that didn't seem fun to me.
That is why I make it a point to decline promotions when they are offered. This is because a higher job rank means having subordinates, which makes reporting the results achieved by my team to superiors my primary role, and shifts the focus of my work to vertical interactions.

I talk to 60 to 70 people outside the company every month

As I wrote in a previous article, I talk to about 60 to 70 people outside the company every month. The people I meet are small and medium-sized business owners I am meeting for the first time, and each meeting lasts about an hour. If my intuition tells me that a person is interesting during that hour, I proceed to a second meeting and beyond.

Doing this seriously really sharpens your conversational skills and your ability to judge people.
However, since the other party is a decision-maker, I must have the appropriate knowledge to face them in order to have a conversation that aligns with their perspective. Any superficial talk will be seen right through.
Therefore, I make sure to never stop learning, and I am particularly mindful of keeping up with DX-related topics and legal matters.

People with wonderful ways of thinking and acting

When I continue to have these serious dialogues, I encounter people (though only about 1 to 2 percent of them) who are truly dedicated to their work and have wonderful ways of thinking and acting regarding management. I then end up working alongside these people while maintaining mutual respect, which in a sense creates a connection that goes beyond just work.

The real thrill of work

This is a thrill that cannot be felt through internal company connections alone.
Of course, I am able to feel the sense of expanding business as part of my role within the company, but more than that, I can feel myself growing while interacting with various people in society and the industry.

I want to polish my horizontal connections

When your job rank becomes higher, vertical interactions become the center of your work.
If that happens, you get to feel this kind of thrill less often. Of course, aiming for the top in a large company might be interesting in its own way.
However, I choose to polish my horizontal connections.
