Enjoying a Stay in Hawaii: Oahu Edition
Last time, I stayed at a Hilton Grand Vacations condominium on Oahu, but because parking fees for facilities around Waikiki are so expensive, this time I arranged a hotel in the Kapolei area instead of an HGV condo.
This trip also serves as research for future family vacations.
Rental Car Trouble: Double Booking!
I reserved an SUV-type vehicle this time as well, but when I went to look for the assigned car, there was already someone else there. It seems there was a double booking.
The reason this happened was that while I was processing the payment authorization with my credit card, I intended to press the ENTER button (green button) on the credit card terminal's screen, but the CANCEL button (red button) next to it reacted instead, causing the transaction to cancel and forcing me to restart the process. During that timing, another customer was assigned the same type of car, so the same vehicle was allocated to them. However, since it was the last small SUV-type vehicle available, I was upgraded to a full-size SUV. Another upgrade! For this stay, I ended up driving a Nissan Pathfinder.
Kapolei Area
During my last stay on Oahu, I was frustrated by the high parking fees and terrible traffic in the Honolulu area. So this time, I intentionally avoided the beach-centric commercial areas and chose a hotel in the West Oahu district of Kapolei, located on the opposite side of the airport. This might be a good choice for those who aren't interested in shopping for brand-name goods or enjoying the beach, but just want to relax and enjoy Hawaiian culture.
In the area where the locals live, there are supermarkets like Walmart and Foodland, where you can easily pick up casual clothing and daily necessities. Everywhere you go, the parking lots are spacious, and getting around by car is very comfortable.
There are also popular gourmet spots scattered around. For example, Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers is a chicken specialty shop where you can enjoy crispy chicken tenders with a special Thousand Island-style sauce. Their thick-cut garlic toast is also very popular, and since the chicken is boneless, it's easy to eat. (My daughter's top recommendation!)
Furthermore, Jollibee, familiar for its cute bee logo, is also recommended. It is a national fast-food chain from the Philippines, a soul food for Filipinos, and is ubiquitous—even more popular than McDonald's. It features Filipino-style spaghetti with a sweet flavor profile. The crispy fried chicken is sure to whet your appetite.
Overall, it is a calm atmosphere and a family-friendly area. You can spend a relaxing time while feeling the local way of life.

the cityscape of Kapolei
The hotel I tried staying at this time is the Hilton chain Hampton Inn & Suites. It is characterized by its reasonable price and good location. It seems that breakfast is standard at all hotels in this area. That said, it is a minimal, simple breakfast. If you want to enjoy a proper breakfast every day, I think a hotel with a kitchen is better. Jollibee is within walking distance.
Additionally, I also recommend the Marriott-affiliated Residence Inn by Marriott Oahu Kapolei, which is within walking distance of Starbucks and Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers. This one is a bit more expensive, but it has a kitchen, refrigerator, and microwave, making it convenient for families. This hotel is very clean because it was recently built. If you prioritize breakfast, I also recommend the Hilton-affiliated Embassy Suites nearby. This is a classic American business-style hotel that I have used often. An American breakfast is provided.
Considering the hotel price range and the convenience of the surrounding environment, the Kapolei area is definitely a "hidden gem."
The Kapolei area is a so-called residential neighborhood; there are few commercial buildings, and there are no high-rise buildings like in Honolulu. Orderly detached houses are lined up. It has the image of an emerging residential area that will flourish from now on.
The average price for a detached house of about 100 square meters is 700,000 to 800,000 dollars. That is roughly around 100 million yen, but considering the weak yen, I think it's like the image of a detached house around 50 million yen in the Kanto region. Looking at it in Japanese yen, Honolulu is positioned as "city center premium" and Kapolei as "suburban emerging residential area," and for actual demand and families, Kapolei has a structure that makes it easier to feel a sense of value.
Last October, the railway (Skyline) connecting Honolulu Airport and Kapolei opened. It is a compact train with 4 cars. Currently, East Kapolei Station is the starting station, and if you stay in this area, moving to the airport is convenient. In particular, the highway from the Honolulu direction is very congested, so it would be good to use the Skyline when picking up family at the airport.
Also, there is a way to rent a car in the Kapolei area without going to the airport. There is also a Budget Rent a Car office in the adjacent shopping center.
The Kapolei area has one exceptionally large water park. On a vast site said to be about 2.5 to 3 times the size of the Tokyo Dome, there are around 20 to 30 diverse water attractions. If there is no traffic from Waikiki, it is located about 40 minutes away by car.
From within the Kapolei region to Wet'n'Wild Hawaii, it takes roughly 10 minutes by car. There are many raft slides for families and groups of friends, and the appeal is that multiple people can ride the same boat and enjoy it together.

Drive to the North Shore
Since the weather is nice today, I'm going for a drive to the North Shore after buying coffee at Starbucks. The destination is Haleiwa Beach Park.

Nearby Laniakea Beach is famous for sea turtles, and if you are lucky, you can see sea turtles sunbathing. You can enjoy the peaceful old town of Hawaii. This time, I decided to go counter-clockwise, taking the highway from the center of the island to Haleiwa, and returning via the local roads on the ocean side.
Traveling from Kapolei is very comfortable because you can avoid traffic jams.
The End
Since most Hawaii tourism uses direct flights to Honolulu International Airport, it is currently difficult to efficiently move to and tour other islands.
The Kapolei area, located in the western part of Oahu, is considered a suitable area as a transit hub when visiting neighboring islands. By staying in this area for a few days to adjust to the time difference and prepare for the itinerary, you can maximize the time spent sightseeing after arriving at the remote islands, and I believe you can utilize the overall itinerary more effectively.
