How to avoid 'behavioral rebound'
It's a good day today, isn't it?
Hello.
I'm Satoru.
Whether in business or in life, 'taking action' is super important.
I used to be like this too, but just thinking ahead and keeping everything inside your head is meaningless and only creates anxiety and worry.
But, I'm going to say something outrageous...
I believe that taking action can also rebound. Just like dieting.
Just as you try to get results in a short period like a crash diet, if you try to get results from your actions in a short period, you will rebound.
If you think about it in terms of dieting, it's easy to understand. You don't suddenly gain weight in just a day or two, right?
It's the result of your lifestyle habits, especially your eating habits and exercise routines, and for some people, it's something that has been building up little by little over 'months' or 'years', right?
Trying to lose that weight in 'one month' or 'two months' is impossible to begin with.
'But for dieting, there's RIZAP or personal training! You can lose weight in a short period with those!'
Some people might argue that.
But I want you to think about this for a second—I'll avoid using real names—but out of all the celebrities who succeeded with RIZAP in their commercials, how many of them have actually managed to keep that physique?
To put it bluntly, if you go back to your original lifestyle habits, rebounding is inevitable. It's unavoidable.
Conversely, those who made a firm resolution and changed their lifestyle habits as well have been able to maintain their physique without rebounding.
From that perspective, achieving and maintaining results in both 'behavior' and 'dieting' works on the same mechanism.
Behind behavior lies 'thinking.' I think thinking corresponds to lifestyle habits when it comes to dieting.
Your thinking includes things like the habits of thought you've built up over many years. No one can change their habits in a short period of time. If you could change them, they wouldn't be habits. Changing your thinking in a short period of time is impossible to begin with.
I'm going to say something a bit complicated now, but to succeed in both behavior and dieting, it's important to not rely on your own willpower, which includes your thinking.
It's easier on your mind to think, 'I have weak willpower.'
Of course, I'm not saying you should give up just because you have weak willpower.
If you blindly believe that 'you can achieve it if you just have strong willpower,' most people will end up unable to finish the race. You're just making things harder on yourself.
Of course, the decision and willpower to change yourself are necessary, but it means not overestimating them.
So, what should you do?
The only way is to create a 'habit' first. You could also replace habits with rules.
I'll explain using dieting since it's easy to understand.
For example, if you decide 'I won't eat after 8 PM,' you just strictly follow that rule.
If you decide 'I will write a note every day,' you just strictly follow that rule.
You don't need to think about reasons, motivation, or meaning. You don't think about brushing your teeth every single time you do it, right?
Habit = Rule
Decide this first. You don't need to decide everything at once. You can just add them on. This is the only way to avoid behavioral rebound.
I want you to think simply. You can skip the reasons and complicated talk. If you want results.
And, don't compare yourself to others! This is an ironclad rule. The only person you should compete with is your yesterday's self.
Preventing behavioral rebound isn't that difficult. So, you'll be fine. You can definitely do it (^_^)
Thank you for reading until the end.
See you tomorrow♪
