You don't have to carry all the responsibility
The desire to be there for others and to be helpful is wonderful and noble.
However, what if that eventually starts to cause you suffering...?
I have a tendency toward over-adaptation, so I used to try to accommodate others even at the expense of myself.
Because I tried too hard to meet others' expectations, I would cross the boundaries between myself and others, taking on burdens that were actually their responsibility.
At the root of why I did that was the fact that I disliked myself.
Unable to express my painful emotions, I began to convince myself that "it's all my fault." By thinking that way, I could give up and tell myself, "it can't be helped."
Furthermore, because I disliked myself, I even had a reckless feeling that "it's okay if I'm punished..."
People who take on too much responsibility likely have these kinds of feelings at their core.
As an aside, there was a time when I lived with the dream that, like Cinderella, a prince might one day appear to save me from this hell...
But let me be clear.
The prince is not coming.
You are the only one who can save yourself.
Instead of waiting for glass slippers, go buy them yourself.
Perhaps someone will eventually notice how hard you are trying.
However, as long as the underlying causes—the thoughts that "I dislike myself" and "I am at fault"—remain, no matter how much you are recognized by those around you, if you do not acknowledge yourself, you will just repeat the same patterns.
I wrote about how someone who dislikes themselves can learn to love themselves in my previous note, so I will omit that here.
Loving yourself means acknowledging your existence. It means accepting yourself.
Once you are able to cherish yourself in that way,
next, try prioritizing your own feelings and intentions in your relationships with others. If people leave because of that, it just means those who didn't respect you are moving on, and the space they leave behind will be filled by people who cherish you.
You do not need to take on excessive responsibility to the point of causing yourself pain.
You only need to take responsibility for what is within your own reach.
Please make choices that prioritize and cherish yourself.
