Instead of saying 'lots of people are bad at math so it's fine',
This is sudden, but how much is 15% off of 2,980 yen?
I don't know!
A whole cabbage is 660 yen. A quarter of a cabbage is 180 yen.
Which one is cheaper?
I don't know!
The character limit for a literary contest entry was 1,500 characters. If I wrote 2,370 characters, how many do I need to delete?
I don't know!!!
I realized when I organized a project called '10 Things That Are Just Impossible' that there are many people who openly admit they are bad at (or find it impossible to do) arithmetic.
□ Cannot do subtraction with regrouping
I hope a situation where I have to calculate 14-8= never comes.
5) Calculations are extremely slow (basically impossible)
Even with addition and subtraction, there is a high chance I will make a mistake. And my calculation speed is incredibly slow. Since careless mistakes are the norm for me, I can't trust my own brain (lol).
Let's use a calculator. When there is no calculator, let's double-check. A triple-check is even better.
Impossible thing 5: Bad at calculating small change
I usually rely on smartphone payments and credit cards. When told 'cash only,' I stare at the coins in my wallet, freeze up, and eventually say, 'I'll pay with a 1,000 yen bill.'
🍡 All calculations
I am extremely weak with numbers. It's not just that I'm bad at math; I'm bad at arithmetic itself. I gave up the moment decimals appeared. I fell asleep when percentages were introduced.
Even if I'm told at the supermarket that something is 30% off, I have no idea. I understand 50%. Since I don't remember the formula for percentages, I use a calculator and calculate it a few times before finally arriving at the correct answer. Now, if I search online for '30% off 500 yen,' it tells me the answer immediately. It's convenient.
I'm also bad at multiplication tables. It's not that I can't do them. I don't really understand it myself, but when calculating 4x8, '36' pops into my head first. Then I have to go through the process of correcting myself, thinking, 'No, no, it's 32.' Compared to other people, I am overwhelmingly bad at calculations.
It's not just everyone who wrote here, but many, many more.
There are surprisingly many people in everyday life who say, 'I'm bad at math or numbers,' and I've often heard it in conversations with friends.
Of course, I don't calculate my children's math drills properly either; I check their answers while looking at the 'answer key' or by using an app called CheckMath. Even though I'm the one who tells them to do their long-form arithmetic.
Math is difficult.
When and where did I start feeling like I was bad at math? I couldn't do it from the first grade of elementary school, so math class was nothing but agony for me.
But I don't want my own children, or by extension, children all over Japan, to have the same experience...!!!
With that thought in mind, I collaborated on writing this book with Takahashi Shoten.
It has only been two days since the release date, but there are already many people on X who have reached out to say, 'I bought it!'
開店早々本屋のどこを探しても見当たらなくて、店員さんに聞いたらまだ店頭に並べていなかったとのことで!!!誰も触れていないピカピカの一冊を手に入れましたっ🙌 https://t.co/QwsTSYymwv pic.twitter.com/PH9bLRXjso

繰り下がり引き算で、「減加法」と「減減法」の両方が解説されていてさすが。
減減法の方がイメージできるのに、減加法しか教えない先生もいて、繰り下がり引き算が苦手になる子もいるとか。 pic.twitter.com/DgTo0cRkBm

Thank you so, so much...!!!
If you read it, I think you'll understand, but first-grade math moves at such a fast pace and covers difficult material.
I have dyscalculia, so it goes beyond just being 'bad at it,' but if it seems like a child is going to pass through the grade while still struggling, I would be happy if this book could help fill in the gaps where they might stumble.
Second graders will soon be starting the multiplication tables.
The hurdle...!!!
Three times seven is twenty-one.
Four times seven is twenty-eight.
It's confusing. One, four, seven, and eight.
I hope that children will come to love math along with Su and Santa (the protagonist).
To everyone who reported back saying 'I bought it!', thank you once again✨
