"Live for the moment!" — How a 90-year-old client taught me how to choose a life without regrets
😞 To those of us who think, "I'm anxious, so I have to earn more..."
I'm anxious about the future, so
I find myself thinking, "I have to earn more."
Is my current salary enough?
Can I really live on just my pension?
So,
I work, I save, I hoard.
Before I know it,
I'm putting "the present" on hold.
──Do you ever feel this way?
When you live a busy life every day,
you tend to put your own life on the back burner.
Someone gave me words that
left a deep impression on me.
👵 The "regrets" shared by a woman in her 90s
She was a female client in her 90s.
When she was young,
she struggled with money constantly.
"My husband and I worked so hard we didn't even have time to sleep."
For the sake of living.
For the sake of our old age.
Working, working, working...
Even so,
the anxiety never went away.
Perhaps because of that strain,
her husband fell ill and passed away.
"We couldn't even go on a trip."
"Our memories... are just all about work."
She said this quietly.
💔 What was left after working so hard?
"Did I really have to
work that hard?"
Those words were
tinged with regret.
Now, they are suffering from a worsening chronic illness,
living a life where they cannot go out freely.
And then, looking me in the eye,
they said this to me.
"Saving is fine, but"
"spend your money when you want to spend it."
"If you work yourself to death like my husband did,
it all amounts to nothing."
🔄 The moment the value of money looked different
They continued,
saying this as well.
"Even if you're alive,
if your body fails and you spend money on hospitals and medicine,
it doesn't feel like you've really used it."
And finally.
"Live for the moment!"
That one phrase
hit me hard in the chest.
📘 Rather than earning, "how you spend" determines your life
Earning is not bad.
Preparing is also important.
But,
is it becoming a life of just earning?
Are you sacrificing the present too much
for the sake of security in old age?
That person's words
confronted me with that very question.
It was completely about me.
As if they saw right through me—
advice that was just too persuasive.
It pierced my heart.
I was supposed to be there to provide care,
but my own heart was being cared for.
Money,
should not just be for "future anxiety,"
but can also be used to "make the most of yourself right now."
I felt like that was what I was taught.
💬 Message to the reader
We spend our days
facing people who are in the final stages of their lives.
That is why
that is why
those words carry such weight.
"Live for the moment!"
If you are currently...
・Anxious about the future and unable to enjoy the present
・Working too hard and feeling emotionally drained
・Wondering, "Is this really okay?"
If you are in that state,
please try stopping for just a moment.
Things you can only do now.
Time you can only savor now.
It is okay to cherish those things.
✅ Summary
・We often sacrifice the present due to anxiety about the future
・Earning money can sometimes become the sole purpose
・What remains in the latter half of life are "memories" and "regrets"
・It is okay to use money to live in the present
