[PC Debugging] A Clumsy Chromebook Makes Writing Notes Easier

I bought this Lenovo 14e Chromebook Gen 3 for 12,000 yen last November.

Looking at the performance numbers, it has an Intel N100 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 64GB SSD.

Despite its minimal specs, if you focus on writing notes, using AI chat, and browsing, this single device can just barely handle it.

And for some reason, I find myself wanting to touch this PC. Why is that?

A dialogue on compensating for spec limitations with 'frequent cleaning'

The specs are right on the edge.

If you only use it for browsing, it runs smoothly and comfortably with about three Google Chrome tabs open.

I chose this PC with a Rakuten SIM inserted, intending it to be a 'write notes anywhere' machine. Although, I've only used it at home so far.

When I do that, I have to keep at least Note, AI (Gemini, ChatGPT), and Amazon open.

When the tabs increase to four or five, I notice the performance starts to lag.

As a result, I end up frequently closing tabs, logging off, and periodically clearing my history.

A sense of security reminiscent of the 'tough feature phones' of the past

This PC is compliant with the MIL standard (MIL-STD-810H).

MIL-STD-810H is the latest version of the military standard 'MIL-STD-810' established by the U.S. Department of Defense.

This ruggedness is exciting.

It works for the essentials and is surprisingly tough.

This Chromebook has something that reminds me of the G-SHOCK mobile phone, the G'zOne, made by Casio, which brings back memories for the Heisei generation.

I used a G'zOne back then too, but it was heavy, to say the least.
Plus, the specs were mediocre.
But above all, it had G-SHOCK-level toughness.

I was thrilled by the 'gear-like' feel of the G'zOne.

The 'Asset Value' of a 12,000 Yen Device, Realized Only Because I Have an M4 Mac

I bought an M4 MacBook Air 15-inch during the New Year's sale this January.

However, this is mainly for my family's entertainment use.
Of course, it runs super smoothly.
The 6-speaker system provides an incredible sense of immersion in front of the PC.

Even so, for some reason, I find myself reaching for this Chromebook.

Partly because it was a bargain at 12,000 yen.
It also has military-grade durability.
I can handle it casually and roughly.

I can't just pick it up and carry it with one hand like this with a Mac.

With its bare-minimum specs, I have to actively take care of it by clearing history and logging off to keep it running comfortably.

The fact that it requires effort is one of the reasons I feel a sense of attachment to it.

Finally, here is who the Lenovo 14e Chromebook Gen 3 is for.

・Those who focus on writing and browsing
・Those who prioritize cost-performance
・Those who use it outdoors frequently

Under these conditions, a Chromebook is more convenient than a cheap tablet.

Rather than spending money on a high-spec PC,

・Periodically 'logging off' and 'clearing browser history'
・Getting up, stretching, or doing some exercises in the meantime

might be more comfortable for both the PC and the user.

It's a PC that's just right for writing notes.
Moreover, my model is an LTE version that allows for direct SIM insertion.
