Quick, Easy, and Delicious: Make Street-Style Grilled Corn at Home
Street-food flavor at home
Corn is on sale for 100 yen an ear!
I couldn't find any reason not to buy it.
I picked out a plump, well-grown ear of corn, shucked it, and brought it home.
I planned to microwave it and eat it right away. But I was able to recreate that street-food flavor in no time!
How to make it
[Ingredients]
・1 ear of corn
※20ml soy sauce or mentsuyu
※20g sugar
[Steps]
1. Wash the corn with water. Place it on a plate while still wet and microwave at 600W for 5 minutes.
2. Remove the plastic wrap (be careful not to burn yourself!), mix the ingredients marked with ※, and brush them on.
3. Transfer to a tray and sear with a gas torch.
Searing is the best!
Following the steps above, washing and microwaving up to step 2 is already delicious enough.
Until now, I've just been microwaving it and eating it immediately.
But! But!!
Since I went to the trouble of buying a gas torch, I decided to try using it.
And if I was going to do that, I figured I'd brush on some sugar soy sauce and aim for that street-food flavor.
When I tried it, it tasted exactly like that amazing street-food flavor.

Just searing with a gas torch makes it fragrant for a moment, but it cools down quickly.
In that regard, the grilled corn is already piping hot because it's been microwaved for 5 minutes.
Since you sear it with a gas torch on top, you can enjoy that piping hot sensation and smokiness just like it was grilled over an open flame.
It's like a summer festival at home!
It's done!

The sweet scent of sugar, soy sauce, and roasting corn.
Take a big bite, and a four-layered harmony fills your mouth: the sweetness of the corn, the saltiness of the soy sauce, the sweetness of the sugar, and the slight bitterness of the charred sear. It's irresistible.
Turn your home into a festive summer fair in as little as 10 minutes.
By the way, I lived in Hokkaido when I was little.
I used to go to Sapporo and would often have grilled corn—or 'yaki-tokibi' as they call it—bought for me at Odori Park.
You can even soak in those nostalgic memories.

Please be very careful when handling fire.
When using a gas torch, use it over a metal tray.
Do not use the torch on Teflon-coated items like T-fal pans.
The heat resistance of Teflon coating is about 260°C.
In contrast, the maximum flame temperature of a gas torch is 1400°C!
When searing, it is very safe to place the food in a tray and sear it inside a camping wind screen.
Gas torch.
There are many manufacturers, so I was unsure, but I decided on the reliable Iwatani brand. Inferior products can cause gas leak accidents.
Always read the instruction manual and use it safely.
Especially right after searing, the metal part of the burner is piping hot! Do not touch; it is dangerous.
By the way, the sushi restaurant I went to the other day was using a SOTO gas torch.
This is also a reliable Japanese manufacturer.
I buy gas canisters in bulk.
I keep buying them at Costco. They are around 2,500 yen for a box.
Buying them by the box is very reassuring in case of power outages or disasters.
If you have a gas torch, you can also sear meat.
You can also use it for finishing hand-kneaded hamburger steaks or grilled fish.
The eel bowl I wrote about in a previous article was also amazing.
