Bad Obsessions and Pride That Make People Ugly
To begin, I would like to think a little about the "pride" that dwells in our hearts.
At times, it becomes fuel that drives us forward and a staff to lean on when treading difficult paths.
Taking pride in one's work and engraving one's achievements in one's heart.
That radiance is healthy self-esteem itself.
However, this light called pride can change its nature at the slightest trigger, transforming into a dark flame that burns the owner from within.
And the "obsessions" born from that flame eventually become chains that bind one's life itself.
This is the story of many people who have twisted such pride and obsessions, losing the color from the landscape of their hearts.
✅ What Distorted Pride Causes
Everything may start from a small tear.
A trivial failure, an unexpected criticism, or the presence of others who seem to shine brighter than oneself.
Those with healthy self-esteem would accept this as food for growth and connect it to their next step.
However, once pride has become distorted, it does not allow for that.
The moment one feels their "pride has been hurt," the heart covers itself in a hard shell and becomes extremely defensive toward the outside world.
This state is very similar to what is called "defensive self-esteem" in psychology.
Even though one feels a wavering in their own value deep down, they desperately put on a brave front so as not to be found out.
The evaluations of others become the absolute standard; one craves praise and bares fangs at criticism.
The feeling of "I can do it," which should have once been a source of positive energy, is replaced by the obsessive idea that "I must never be thought of as inferior."
Once it reaches this point, the world begins to look as if it is full of enemies.
A colleague's success is not something to be celebrated, but appears as a threat that undermines one's own value.
A pointed remark from a junior is not heard as advice to be grateful for, but only as rebellion that demeans one's own authority.
Admitting one's own faults means the collapse of the castle of pride, so one can never admit to being wrong.
As a result, learning stops, and the door to growth is firmly shut.
Relationships with those around them become frayed, and the person gradually becomes isolated.
All while hiding the fragile, trembling true self deep within their heart.
It is as if they are wearing armor of glass that is cracked from the inside, continuing a lonely battle so that no one can touch them.
✅ The Dark Obsessions It Created
To protect the castle built by distorted pride, people begin to have strange "obsessions."
These are different from the flexible and positive spirit of inquiry that encourages self-growth.
Rather, they are attachments for self-defense, like a curse that eats away at the heart.
The prime example of this is excessive perfectionism.
The thinking that "I must never fail" or "anything less than a hundred points is worthless" robs one of the joy of the challenge and turns the process into mere penance.
Work or hobbies that one was once absorbed in eventually turn into "tasks to protect one's pride."
There is no room there for the self that gets excited about new discoveries, nor for enjoying trial and error.
All that remains is the fear of failure and the pressure that one must be perfect.
Obsession with face and status is also likely one of these dark obsessions.
The attitude of "I am right" or "I do not accept anything other than my own way" rejects cooperation with others and makes creative dialogue impossible.
Even if one realizes their mistake somewhere in their heart, a counterproductive stubbornness—"I can't back down now" or "I don't want to admit defeat"—makes them continue down the wrong path.
This may be close to self-justification to resolve what is called "cognitive dissonance" in psychology.
Because pride is temporarily protected by remaining wrong rather than the pain of admitting a mistake.
However, the price for that is far too high.
As these obsessions become stronger, pure emotions like "fun" and "happiness" quietly disappear from a person's heart.
Even if one achieves something, all that is gained is relief and anxiety about the next failure.
Evaluation from others becomes the only reward, and if that cannot be obtained, it feels as if all effort was meaningless.
The heart is tossed about by the desire for approval, always thirsty, and never satisfied.
Those obsessions, rather than enriching life, simply wear down the heart and turn the world monochrome.
✅ Let's Live More Simply
Why do we wear such complex armor and forge chains that bind ourselves?
What on earth is that distorted pride trying to protect?
Evaluation from others, social status, past glory.
These may certainly seem important at certain phases of life.
However, how much have we lost in order to protect them?
A heart that honestly says "thank you" with gratitude.
The courage to admit mistakes by saying "I'm sorry."
The warmth to be able to rejoice in someone else's success as if it were one's own.
And above all, that heart-pounding excitement when taking on new challenges without fear of failure.
Unhealthy pride and obsessions gradually dry up those fresh, human emotions.
Taking off the armor and breaking the chains might be a frightening thing.
Exposing one's defenseless self to the world might be accompanied by pain.
But isn't it only after breaking that hard shell that true growth and deep connections with others await?
Is that obsession of yours really enriching your life?
Is that pride setting you free?
Or has it become an invisible prison that locks you in a lonely castle?
While you intended to fight for what you should protect, has the act of fighting itself become the goal before you knew it?
Now might be the time to place your hand on your chest and ask yourself quietly.
