A sheltered girl, the cardboard box trap.
Introduction
Kids are...
they really are geniuses at finding games you'd never imagine.
My 3-year-old daughter with Down syndrome.
What she's into lately is—
A cardboard box for plastic bottles.
Yes, that cardboard box.
It's just an empty box left over after finishing a drink, but...
Before I know it, she's already inside it.
Sitting there all cute—truly a "sheltered girl" (a pun on 'hakoiri musume' meaning a sheltered daughter, but literally 'girl in a box') ꉂ🤣w𐤔
In and out, out and in.
Just repeating that seems to be so much fun for her.
And then, "thump!?"—she tips over to the side.
She crawls out laughing, adjusts her position, and tries again.
However, my daughter's play doesn't end there.
Suddenly, she lifts the box... "pop!"
She puts it over her head ꉂ🤣w𐤔
She starts walking like that—"bang!"
...You're going to bump into things, right? ❓ꉂ🤣w𐤔
But even that is part of the game.
She giggles, walks again, and bumps into things again.
And the next target is—Daddy.
"If I can wear it, Daddy can wear it too."
That natural child logic explodes.
She puts it on me and hits it!
She takes it off and puts it back on!
Daddy is completely caught up in a "pre-designed flow" of play.
...However, here comes an unexpected turn.
Daddy waiting for the next action.
I'm waiting, I'm waiting, you know?...
|´-`) peek
...Huh!?
She's gone!! ꉂ🤣w𐤔
A masterful "abandonment play."
She really did it... ⎛𖥚・̄ധ・̄𖥚⎞
Afterword
Just a cardboard box.
What is nothing but trash to an adult becomes a wonderful "toy" to a child.
And, it's not just that I'm being made to laugh...
I realize that this series of play—"entering," "exiting," "wearing," "bumping," and "trying again"—is an important step in my daughter's growth.
Moving her body, using her ingenuity, sometimes failing—and turning it all into laughter.
All of that is slowly but surely piling up, increasing the things she "can do."
Seeing my daughter, who has the characteristics of Down syndrome, expand her own world through play,
I feel my heart warm up, thinking, "I'm so happy every time she gains one more thing she can do."
Today, in our home, the sound of Daddy's laughter caught in the cardboard trap,
and the sight of my daughter stacking up small growth in the shadows of that, are shining.
Conclusion
Finding small growth alongside laughter in these moments of daily life...
That has become a "treasure" for our family.
