[Middle/High School Entrance Exams] Family Consultation Room 8 [How to Choose a Cram School II]
I have not spent my entire professional life working exclusively in human resources and labor-related fields since graduating from university;
having experience as a "manager in the retail and service industries,"
"cram school principal,"
"professional private tutor," etc.
means that while I am performing my main job in HR and labor affairs, I am often consulted by my clients about
"how to raise children and choosing a cram school."
In such cases, I
generally answer that it is best to choose a cram school that both the child and the parent can be somewhat satisfied with, generally answer that it is best to choose a cram school that both the child and the parent can be somewhat satisfied withbut I have often been asked more in-depth questions about guidelines for doing so.
In other words, I thought that the above questions and family concerns werethings that generally apply to many children and parents,so I would like to write about them as a series.
—
In the 8th installment, I will write about"How to choose a cram school (physical aspects)."
—
In the first installment of this series, I wrote an article about how to choose a cram school that suits your child, but this time, I will write about
"how to choose a cram school that suits your child 'physically'."
"how to choose a cram school that suits your child 'physically'"
I will write about this.

As I have written, I have clients in my main business who run cram schools, and when those schools are short-staffed, I help out by teaching classes as an instructor.
Naturally, I do not help out every day or every week, so there are many students I see for the first time in several months.
This time, it is a story from when I went to help out for the first time in about three months, since after the summer vacation (winter 2024), andone student's deviation score had increased by about 7 points.
Since such a rise in deviation score is quite rare, I asked the head of the cram school for the reason, andthey said that the student has been doing self-study at the cram school almost every day since the summer vacation., they said.
—
By the time they are in their third year of junior high school, they have regular classes two or three times a week, so the time spent studying at the cram school increases compared to other grades.
However, that student
“1 to 2 hours before the start time of regular classes”
“3 to 6 hours on days when there are no regular classes”
is spending that time doing self-study at the cram school.
Because of that, it is a result that is natural to say the least, but the deviation score had risen sharply like this time.
Since it exceeded a deviation score of 60 and Asaka Reimei and Asaka High School also came into range, I encouraged them by saying they must keep up this pace!
*It seems this student successfully passed the Asaka High School entrance exam!
Congratulations! (As of April 2025)

Increasing study time
is necessary to improve proficiency not only in children's learning but in everything, and it is a difficult thing that not everyone can do.
Currently, words like 'time performance' and 'cost performance' are rampant, buttaking learning seriously and increasing the time spent studying leads to better resultsis the point of learning.
In such cases,
the location of the cram school (distance from home, etc.)
has a major impact.
-
Studying at home (in one's own room) versus studying in a cram school's self-study room.
Assuming the same amount of study time, in most cases, studying in a self-study room is more efficient.
This is because,
being comfortable ≠ being efficient
is true.
Of course, studying at home might be the most comfortable place in the world for a child, as there are only family members around and the sense of security that comes from being in a familiar place.
However, that does not necessarily mean that study efficiency is high.
When studying at home, there are temptations near your child such as manga, TV, and smartphones, and the child can decide their own time allocation as they please.
On the other hand, when studying in a self-study room, there are eyes around (cram school instructors and other students), so they proceed with their studies while maintaining a moderate sense of tension.
If there is something they do not understand, they can ask for an explanation, so it is self-evident that a self-study room is more efficient.
*For the reasons above, I also recommendstudying at a library (public space). You cannot receive explanations, but there is a fair amount of tension.
-
However, if transportation to the cram school is required (e.g., the cram school is far from home), students cannot come for self-study based on their motivation alone, so the frequency of self-study inevitably decreases.
Also, there is a certain number of kind children who think, "I can't ask my parents to drive me just for self-study..."
While the atmosphere of the cram school is important, it is recommended to attend a cram school that iswithin walking or cycling distance for your child.
*I once had a student who could not use a bicycle because they were seriously involved in "ballet"
(they did not want to build unnecessary muscle from cycling).
It's a difficult problem, isn't it...
-
However, there are also sufficient benefits to the arrangement of parents driving their children to the cram school.
That is, while in the car during pick-up and drop-off, time for communication between parent and child is (forcibly) created.
Once children reach junior high school age, it is common for conversations with their parents to decrease.
In the past, eating meals together was that time, but that habit is now disappearing.
However, in a pick-up and drop-off situation (a confined space), it is a situation where conversation can naturally occur or be generated, and many children talk about various things there.
A situation where a scenario for talking is naturally and forcibly created is quite valuable, so pick-up and drop-off itself is by no means bad.
—
As mentioned above, how to choose a cram school also involves physical factors (the location of the cram school), so I would like you to think carefully based on various requirements.
