There are probably many people who have heard such words.
But in reality, which is more important, "quality" or "quantity"?

① The answer is, both are important—
However, there is a priority.
Let me start with the conclusion.
From a medical and biological perspective, good sleep requires three conditions.

• Regular sleep (rhythm)
Only when these three are met can it be called "good sleep."
In other words—

This is the order.
Why this order?
During sleep, in our bodies—

For these "tasks," a certain amount of time is absolutely necessary.

Even if you sleep deeply (quality), if you only sleep for 6 hours (quantity), the repair work will end halfway through.Therefore, ensuring "quantity" is the top priority.
And if you sleep at different times every day (rhythm), your internal clock will be disrupted, and you won't be able to get deep sleep itself.

This order is scientifically correct.

② Why is "quantity" the top priority?
'I was fine pulling all-nighters when I was young'—
I think many people feel that way.
But in reality—
even when you were young, short sleep duration
accumulated damage to your brain and cells.
It’s just that, due to the resilience of youth,
you looked fine on the surface.
In fact, for teenagers,
longer sleep duration is necessary for growth, learning, and memory consolidation,
and the 'National Sleep Foundation and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare'
recommend 8 to 10 hours of sleep.
(7 to 9 hours are recommended for those in their 20s to 70s,
and 7 to 8 hours for those in their 80s and older.)
In other words, at any age—
first, you need sufficient sleep duration (quantity).
For example—
if you only have 5 hours of sleep,
your body decides the following:
'There isn't enough time for repair.
I'll repair the parts necessary for life support first,
and put the 'nervous system' and 'beauty' on the back burner.'
As a result—
you feel tired from the morning,

③ How to determine if you are sleeping enough
The scientifically recommended sleep duration
is generally 7 to 9 hours for adults.
However, because there are individual differences,

If every morning,

・your body feels heavy even after waking up
・you feel sleepy during the day

it is a sign that you are securing
sufficient sleep duration for yourself.

④ 'Quality' is, of course, also important
However,
'quantity is not all that matters'
—that is the point.
For example—
even if you sleep for 9 hours,
・you wake up many times in the middle of the night
・you don't feel refreshed even after waking up in the morning
・you feel strong sleepiness during the day
if you are in this state,
there is a high possibility that there is a problem with the 'quality' of your sleep.
Even if you have secured the quantity,
if the quality is poor, your body cannot recover sufficiently.
What is important is whether, when you wake up,
you feel a 'sense of restorative sleep.'
That is why, first—
secure a solid 7 hours of sleep.
(For teenagers, secure 8 hours)
On top of that,
work on adjusting your rhythm and improving quality.

the most solid foundation for sleep habits.

all the 'habits' I have told you about so far
were 'preparations' to be done while awake.

by taking deep breaths during the day,

and your sleep is likely to be shallow.

・Take deep breaths if you feel your breathing is shallow during the day
just by being conscious of these two things, you will find it easier to fall asleep.

Chapter 5 | The 'Final Preparation' Before Bed
The 1–2 hours before bed are the
'final preparation time' for sleep—
how you spend this 'time before bed' will significantly change how smoothly you fall asleep and the quality of your sleep. —
① Prepare the bedroom environment
First, it is important to prepare the 'bedroom environment'.
• Room temperature: Around 25°C in summer, around 15°C in winter
• Humidity: 50–60%
• Lighting: As dark as possible (blackout curtains are recommended)
• Sound: A quiet environment
Just by preparing this environment, the quality of your sleep will change significantly. —
② Dim the room lights 1–2 hours before bed
Before bed, it is important to spend time in a room that is as dark as possible. Why? Because exposure to bright light suppresses the secretion of melatonin (the sleep hormone). In particular, be careful with the blue light from smartphones, tablets, and PCs. Your brain will mistake it for 'daytime,' and sleepiness will be pushed away. Ideally, do not look at smartphones or PCs 1–2 hours before bed. If you must look at them, turn on the blue light cut feature or lower the screen brightness to the minimum. Even just doing this will change how easily you fall asleep. —
③ Bathe 1–2 hours before bed
For good sleep, the most effective habit is 'bathing'. The human body is designed to feel sleepy when the core body temperature drops from a raised state. That is why you should soak in a lukewarm bath of around 40°C for about 15–20 minutes, 1–2 hours before bed. Just by doing this:
• Core body temperature rises,
• Then it gradually drops,
• And sleepiness arrives just at the right time for bed.
Furthermore, after your bath, rinse only your ankles with cold water. If you add this, blood flow will improve even more, and your body temperature will drop more smoothly. —
④ Light stretching before bed
Light stretching of the neck, shoulders, and ankles before bed is also recommended. When muscle tension is released, blood flow improves, and the body enters 'rest mode' more easily. The point is 'not to overdo it.' Intense stretching is counterproductive—
• Slowly rotate your neck

• Slowly flex and extend your ankles
