🌸Management Future Notebook No. 192: 'Why Future Vision Changes Current Decision-Making'

(Written by Akifumi Yasumura / Business Ability Development Co., Ltd.)

■ Introduction

It has been over a year since I started the 'Future Vision Realization Association.' There are people who have lost 10 kilograms in a month, and others who have been promoted three ranks to become executive officers.

In a survey conducted with first-year junior high school students, over 70% of the students wrote that they had begun to be conscious of the future and that their learning behavior had changed, which was published in the Japan Educational Press. That school continues the 'Future Realization Project' to this day.

However, since someone told me, 'I don't know how to create a future vision,' I will explain how to create a future vision today.

■ Where does a future vision come from?

There is a concept called 'pain' and 'gain.' Pain refers to the suffering, dissatisfaction, anxiety, and states one wishes to avoid in the current situation. For example, it is the state of wanting to lose weight because you have gained too much.

Gain refers to the results, joy, peace of mind, and desirable states you want to obtain in the future. For example, it is the state of wanting to increase your income.

People are motivated by both the power to move away from pain and the power to obtain gain. By clarifying these two, the future state is determined, and the direction to move in is born. With only pain, people may temporarily take avoidance actions. With only gain, it may end as just a wish. Therefore, we determine the future vision through pain and gain. For example, gaining weight and feeling anxious about your health is pain. Recovering your health and being in a state where you can lightly enjoy work and life is gain. Or, not seeing sales growth and feeling anxious about the future of your employees is pain. Becoming an organization where employees act autonomously and generate stable revenue is gain.

■ Principle

In other words, the principle of realizing a future vision can be explained by the following flow: Recognizing current pain, while simultaneously → clarifying the gain you want to obtain in the future → depicting the necessary behavioral changes as a future state → using that future as a decision-making standard for how things should be → incorporating the vision into daily actions. The important thing is not to try to decide the entire path from the beginning of the future vision to its realization. Many people whose visions do not come true are too conscious of reality and the process. Negative consciousness toward one's incompetent self, weak-willed self, low-ability self, or past self keeps the future away. Simply try setting a 'self who is doing new XX actions every day' compared to before as your future vision.

When your future self becomes clear, your current selection criteria change. This is because you will start judging not by 'whether it is easy' or 'whether I will fail,' but by 'whether it is a choice that brings me closer to that future.'

■ Editor's Note

I have had many experiences where, instead of chasing the future as 'something I want to get someday,' when I was grateful for it as something I had already received, the way reality moved, the environment, and the constraints changed. I cannot yet explain scientifically why that happens. However, depending on whether you look at the future from the side of lack or as something already given, a person's facial expressions, words, judgments, and relationships with those around them change. Perhaps receiving the future is not about attracting the future itself, but about changing into a current self worthy of that future.

■ Today's Question

Is your consciousness directed toward the unchangeable past? Or is it directed toward the future that you can change from now on?

■ Cat's Muttering

'It's certain that cats live in the now and the future rather than reflecting on the past, meow.'

■ Conclusion

The results of the future vision realization workshop are mysterious, and in the past, I was skeptical. However, having tried it, things I never would have imagined are happening one after another. While there are parts that cannot be explained by logic alone, if you are interested, please give it a try.
