Though it differs slightly from what I wished for, receiving the inquiry, everything is for the best | Special Adoption | A Phone Call ②
Looking back now, it is true that the first thing the person from the Child Guidance Center said was just to confirm our gender preference; they didn't say a single word about making a request to us. Yet, based on how I responded, the conversation proceeded as if it were already a given that we would be welcoming a child into our home.
The person from the Child Guidance Center kept asking repeatedly, almost persistently, "You are okay with a boy, right? It's a boy, are you really sure?" I wondered if there were people who would say they didn't want a boy, and I couldn't forget that way of asking.
As we continued the conversation over the phone, they asked if we could come to the Child Guidance Center soon, so we decided to go hear more the following afternoon. We had originally both taken an extra day off so we could rest properly the next day, knowing we would be tired from the long-distance travel.
Actually, I thought the interview would only take an hour or two, so we planned to return by Shinkansen and limited express train, arriving home late at night. However, the interview took longer than expected, and with the subsequent phone calls, train transfers, and going to the coin locker to get our luggage and change clothes, time just flew by.
If nothing had come up, we had talked about taking a night bus to arrive in Kyoto the next morning and then slowly riding local trains back. We were looking forward to that as a first-time experience, but after receiving the call, we ended up taking a limited express train from Kyoto to get home as soon as possible.
Things were moving along so quickly, and I was restless knowing we were going tomorrow. When I said, "I really never thought things would happen like this!", my husband kept warning me, "It's not decided yet... they might be telling several other couples, so don't get your hopes up too soon..."
Even so, as the sky grew dim, I remembered the illuminated rabbit sign of Nishimatsuya that I had seen from the car window and thought, "We need to get all sorts of baby supplies!" I was excited all by myself, happy that the baby supplies I had been collecting even before I knew if a child would come or not were finally going to see the light of day.
This is the story of the one phone call after the interview.

Even so, I never thought it would pay off in this way. My husband said that until we actually welcome the child, and until the guardianship period ends and the special adoption is legally finalized, we really can't be sure yet.
It was true when I thought about it calmly. The birth parents might suddenly change their minds and say they want to raise the child themselves, or there are various small hurdles such as whether the matching will work out or if the guardianship period will end safely, so we couldn't get our hopes up until the very end when the parent-child relationship is established.
However, I think now that my husband, who kept a straight face, was actually feeling nervous about various things deep down. Even though he kept telling me it wasn't certain yet, my mind was still on baby supplies.
"When the time for the decision comes, the time for preparation will have already passed."
That thought suddenly came to me, and I started thinking about what I needed to do to prepare while I could. Time passed with a strange feeling, as if the sadness of the interview, which had felt like the end of the world just a few hours earlier, was being gradually wiped away.
We had been waiting and wishing for an opportunity through a private clinic, but we never imagined we would be able to welcome a zero-year-old child through the Child Guidance Center.
