Investigating the Claim That '80% of Geniuses are Aquarius': 40 History of Canadian Literature
We are investigating whether the claim often cited in the fortune-telling industry that '80% of geniuses are Aquarius' is true. This is the 'Investigating the Claim That 80% of Geniuses are Aquarius' series.
Please see the following article for an explanation of the entire investigation.
This time, we will investigate geniuses in Canadian literature.
1. Selection Criteria
Individuals who meet the following conditions were considered geniuses of Canadian literature.
・Individuals whose names appear in subheadings in 'The Cambridge History of Canadian Literature' (Sairyusha)
・Individuals whose names appear in subheadings in 'History of Canadian English Literature' (Sanyusha Publishing)
・Individuals whose names appear in subheadings, or authors of works whose names appear in subheadings, in 'Quebec Literature Studies' (Ochanomizu Shobo)
Canadian literature in Japan still seems to have low name recognition, and the current situation is that there are few books dealing with its literary history. It is possible that the books mentioned above cover everything.
Although Canada's official languages are English and French, Quebec is an exception where only French is the official language. Therefore, if one is to investigate Canadian literature, it is necessary to check both English and French literature.
However, among the few books on Canadian literary history, there are some titled 'History of Canadian English Literature.' In other words, they do not cover the French-speaking sphere. In this investigation, I had been surveying each history using two books each, but I felt it would be wrong to deliberately miss the French-speaking sphere. Therefore, this time, I exceptionally attempted to supplement with a book on Quebec literature, resulting in a survey of a total of three books.
The establishment of Canadian literature is quite recent compared to other literatures, with its full-scale beginning considered to be the 19th century. Perhaps because of this, its reception in Japan is still in its early stages, and there are many individuals who do not have entries on the Japanese version of Wikipedia. This situation may be linked to the scarcity of books on Canadian literary history. However, perhaps because I surveyed three books, I have gathered about the same number of people as other literary histories, despite it being a literary history with a short span.
As for other characteristics, in addition to writers such as novelists and poets, sociologists, educators, folk-rock groups, and singer-songwriters are also included, making for a wider range of individuals selected compared to other literary histories. Also, the percentage of women is quite high, ranking at the top among the literary histories I have covered so far.
