♦︎54 "Being Understood"
My son clinging to me while crying
saying he doesn't want to go to daycare.
For now, all I could do was hold him.
My wife is always busy in the morning too.
"Say something to him."
Feeling that atmosphere,
I couldn't find the right words.
I asked his teacher when I picked him up.
"At times like that,
give a name to their feelings."
"Like 'You don't want to go,'
'You're feeling anxious.'"
I wondered if I shouldn't be encouraging him.
"First, empathy.
When children feel 'understood,' they calm down.
Then, you help them shift their mood."
The next morning.
"You don't want to go, do you?"
My son nodded slightly while crying.
"Tell me what was fun at daycare when you get back!"
It doesn't have to be the perfect words.
It's about trying to understand their feelings.
Even on mornings when he cries,
it was about putting his feelings into words for him.
