A Young Man Singing Passionately by the Windy Sea
On my day off, I was playing at the beach with my family.
It was a windy day.
Sand was flying mercilessly,
the picnic blanket kept flipping up,
and I was desperately holding down the edges.
Just then,
a young man appeared, pedaling his bicycle at full speed with a fierce expression.
Fighting against the wind,
he headed straight for the sea.
I had a feeling something was about to begin.
He parked his bike roughly,
ran straight toward the ocean,
stopped without hesitation,
and then—
He started to sing.
At the top of his lungs.
Facing the strong wind.
In an instant, the beach became an arena.
His voice was scattered by the wind,
and the chorus drifted away almost horizontally.
But he didn't care.
Because he had decided,
that he would sing here, on this day.
He must have been thinking about it for days.
“Alright, I’m going to sing at the beach.”
He planned his setlist at home,
wrote the song order in his phone’s notes,
and checked the wind speed app and the weather forecast.
“Wind speed 8m/s. Not bad.”
“Sunny. The sun is waiting for me.”
He bit into his ham and egg toast for breakfast,
and gently coated his throat with hot water and honey.
When his mother asked,
“You’re eating so fast, where are you going?”
he replied bluntly,
“Just to the beach,”
without taking his eyes off his ham and egg toast.
When he was little,
he used to report everything, even when he was going to the bathroom,
but before I knew it, my son had more secrets.
His mother doesn't know.
My son, today,
unleashing the first verse of the second song into the strong wind.
He was serious.
Closing his eyes,
spreading his arms,
he took in the wind with his whole body.
Periodically, he would glance toward the audience—
that is, us playing on the beach—
to check on us.
Is it reaching you?
My voice.
Almost horizontally.
Even so, he sings.
The ocean makes people feel liberated.
Shame is blown away by the wind,
and self-consciousness is washed away by the waves.
His back looked so dazzling.
My daughter and husband stared at his singing back with curiosity.
"Mom, that guy is throwing his setlist at the wind," I even hallucinated hearing.
To him, our gaze must look like one of admiration.
As for me,
I was holding down the lid of the popcorn container that was about to fly away,
shaking the sand out of my daughter's shoes,
desperately trying to protect reality.
I don't have the courage to scream into the strong wind.
I have my hands full just holding down the corners of the picnic blanket.
The ocean makes people feel liberated.
But I am still,
in charge of the weights.
