The Mental Space Created by White Space: Rediscovering the Value of Unseen Gaps

Today was my day off from work. (Since I'm writing this on Friday and posting it on Saturday morning, it was technically yesterday.)

I'm really satisfied today because I was able to get a lot of things done that had piled up!

To be fair, to take today off, I packed my work into this week, sleeping from 1-2 AM and waking up at 6:30 AM. It was tough, and I even zoned out on the train...

Reaffirming the Importance of White Space

Lately, I've really been feeling the importance of having "white space" or "leeway."

In terms of writing on Note (a Japanese blogging platform), this particular article by Lira no Hana ꕤ Kotoba Healer resonates with me.

One key takeaway is to avoid over-explaining and instead, leave some things to the reader's interpretation.

As I commented on her post, I used to write only business documents, so I never really understood the concept of "not writing everything" or "leaving white space." But since I started writing on Note, I've begun to grasp it a little.

My job involved creating specifications (like contracts) that clearly defined "who does what by when," leaving no room for ambiguity.

Because of this, I couldn't write in a way that allowed readers to enjoy imagining what was "between the lines." However, after remembering how to use white space from my web design days, I've started to understand it better.

Even the way you use white space can make something look amateurish or professional.

It's like there's nothing there, but it has meaning, or it enhances other elements. That's the feeling.

Speaking of which, it's not just about writing or design:

"People with composure are more attractive."

Yeah, composure and white space—maybe they are important after all! 😂

Of course, there's a part of me that thinks, "How can I have any leeway when I'm juggling work, childcare, and Note?!" But despite that contradiction, I feel like I need to make sure to leave some white space.

Forcing white space by sacrificing sleep is a mistake. So, adding the condition of "maintaining a healthy lifestyle" makes the difficulty level feel maxed out. Still, I want to try to adjust my schedule so I can take at least one day off per month.

How can I make that happen?
