Small Voices, Small Books Exhibition: A Delicious Time with Books at the Old Folk House Cafe HAGISO
Yes, it was truly a happy time.
KAZENONE BOOK hosted the
Small Voices, Small Books exhibition, and I had made sure to take the Thursday it started off. The book event featuring the small zine I created was being held at the old folk house cafe
HAGISO gallery, a place I had long yearned to visit.
and in 2013 it was reborn as the minimal cultural complex HAGISO.

I arrived after a five-minute walk from the station through a residential area.
A black house?
It has an atmosphere that feels strangely nostalgic.
The monochrome and wood tones blend together.

It’s the first day!
but I was really lucky that there were just two seats left,
so I decided to have lunch.
I sat in a seat where I could look toward the kitchen.
The gallery space is on the right,
and if I turned to the side, I could see books and zines lined up right next to me,
which made my heart race.
The classic mackerel sandwich.
The freshly fried mackerel is thick and fluffy on the inside.
The outside has a nice, crispy, crunchy sound.
Under the bread, there is the flavor of onions and vinegar.
The punch of the grain mustard is also just right.
The classic is definitely recommended!
Seasonal coconut tropical parfait.
Even after the satisfying volume of the mackerel sandwich,
the temptation of the vibrant red, white, and yellow summer fruit colors was too much.
It was perfectly tart, sweet, and milky,
and the gelato was surprisingly delicious!
but I stayed seated for a long time.
For some reason, it was hard to move.
Books that were carefully written, printed on chosen paper with chosen type, and bound,
were lined up on the walls and tables, each with a comment introducing it.
I just wanted to savor the fact that such a space was right next to me,
along with the soft acidity of the original blend coffee.

I finally made it to the gallery after lingering in the cafe for quite a while.
I spent my time so slowly that by the time I finished looking at them one by one, it was almost snack time.
However, while drinking my coffee, I started to wonder if it was really okay to have sent my own ZINE to this place.
Every ZINE there was a charming book that reflected its own unique personality.
The cafe was so comfortable that the gallery in the same building felt like a stage far away and high up.
Even though they were just hanging up my little book, it reminded me of the nervousness I felt at piano recitals when I was a child.
I didn't tell anyone that I was the one who drew it, but I never expected that having people touch and flip through pages printed on paper would feel so raw.
Just as you get nervous when you get greedy and try to play the piano too well, from now on I want to draw, convey, and express things carefully, just as I feel happy and joyful.
I thought about leaving without introducing myself, but when I was paying, I talked a little with Ms. Sakurai, the owner of KAZENONE BOOK, and the bear muffin.
She was a lovely person with a clear, bell-like voice and a smile, and she told me that she had intentionally displayed my small picture book ZINE in the bottom-left corner of the wall because she wanted people to "open it quietly by themselves in a peaceful place."
"Yes, I think that's the best position!"
I told her sincerely.
Even in school classrooms, I always liked the seat in the very back by the window.

and it's the same exceptional flavor I tasted in the parfait.
I paired it with

Love at first sight. I couldn't help but bring home this world where poetry and photography by different people blend together so perfectly♡
✳︎Poetry and Strolls
I had been looking for this ever since I learned about it in an article by Natsuki, whom I love reading on note, and I was finally able to find it since it was selected for this exhibition.
Three of the books have white covers, and on two of them, the title text is silver on a white background.
Depending on the angle, that color looks like a twinkling star, and the subtle indentations of the letterpress printing are just so beautiful.
I hope that one day I will be able to draw pages that suit such covers.
I decided to start making my next ZINE.
When your stomach and heart are full, you feel a little stronger, and it seems to give you the energy to move toward your own happiness.
