[The Devil's Trade I Made with Nyangostar]
Final Episode
How Nyango Came to My House
Nyangostar groaned toward the full moon with a deep voice, "Vunyaaan!" just like on the day we first traded.
The orange fireball appeared again, split in two, and entered into me and Nyangostar.
Next, Nyangostar breathed out a blue fireball, and a red fireball flew out from inside me.
The two fireballs lined up.
"Huh? What does this mean? It's the exact opposite of before."
"We're starting the heart trade, nya."
Nyangostar swallowed the red fireball first.
"No! I don't want to swallow something like this!"
"How many times do I have to tell you, nya? It's already impossible, nyaro. You gave me your eyes. Next, I'm giving you my heart. This is a contract. The devil is waiting for the trade to be completed, nya. Breach of contract is not allowed, nya."
"Isn't there a way for both of us to live?"
"There's no such convenient story, nya. Plus-minus zero is the way of this world, nya!"
"I don't want to!"
"Besides, nya, I'm going to die soon anyway, nyaro."
"Huh? Why?"
"I've already lived for over fifteen years. My body, exhausted from life as a stray, won't heal. Simply put, it's my lifespan, nyaro. So, hurry up and swallow the fireball, nyaro!"
As I continued to refuse, Nyangostar said something to the blue fireball.
Then, the blue fireball suddenly headed toward me and forced its way into my mouth.
I screamed, 'No!'
The fireball passed through my throat, causing pain.
The next moment, Nyangostar collapsed.
My heart gave a thumping beat.
I collapsed as well.

—That was the story of how Nyangostar came to my house.
Nyangostar began transferring memories into my brain.
A beautiful woman with long, silky black hair raised Nyango, spoiling him rotten.
The woman lived alone and went to work every day. Nyango would dash to the bay window on the west side of the apartment. A silhouette that looked like her would notice Nyango's intense gaze and wave back.
Every day, while gazing at the unchanging view from the window, Nyango would wait for her return in the same spot.
By the time the bright blue sky began to tilt into the gradients of twilight, her silhouette would head toward the apartment. Finally, her footsteps would draw near, and Nyango would dash to the entrance to greet her.
Overjoyed, Nyango would launch a full-throttle purring assault, and she would pick him up gently with a beaming smile.
Then, Nyango would lick her nose, and she would bump her nose against his for a nose kiss.
That was their signal for 'I'm home' and 'Welcome back.'
On her days off, she would put Nyango in the car and take him to all sorts of places.
Nyango would wear a leash, sit politely next to her, and gaze at the scenery he couldn't quite see well, together with her.
Once, on a day with a bright blue sky, there was the scent of the tide.
Sand stuck to the pads of his paws.
The cold wind and the sound of the waves.
And then, my sister said, 'The sea is cold today.'
Once, a pink petal drifted into Nyangostar's lunch box of boiled chicken breast.
My sister's lunch box was also covered in petals, and every time the wind blew, the picnic blanket was dyed pink.
A moment in spring, with a warm breeze blowing gently.
Small pink fragments danced and fluttered in the air.
Seeing that, my sister said, 'It's a cherry blossom blizzard.'
Every year on June 15th, my sister would throw a birthday party for Nyangostar.
For Nyangostar's first birthday, there was a single candle stuck into his favorite premium cat food can.
For his second birthday, there were two candles stuck into the cat food can.
For his third birthday, a red candle shaped like the number 3 was stuck into my sister's special homemade boiled chicken breast.
The freshly boiled, warm chicken was surprisingly delicious, and when I purred while eating it, my sister laughed out loud, looking so happy.
That was the last birthday Nyangostar spent with my sister.
One day, my sister didn't come home for the night.
It was the first time she had stayed out since she started living with Nyangostar.
After that, my sister began to lose weight rapidly, and the trash can filled up with empty medicine containers.
The days when my sister couldn't get out of bed increased, and whether she went to work or not became inconsistent.
But because my sister was home every day, Nyangostar was happy.
One day, my sister left the house with a lot of luggage and didn't come back for a while.
Instead, every day, my sister's younger sister or her mother would come over to take care of Nyangostar.
Nyangostar's heart grew more and more anxious with each passing day.
Every night, Nyango waited at the usual spot for his sister to come home.
He waited for days and days, listening for the sound of her footsteps returning home.
One day, his sister came home with her mother, sitting in a wheelchair.
Nyango was so happy that he meowed until his throat felt like it would collapse.
He cried, feeling joy from the bottom of his heart.
His chest felt like it was going to burst.
But the sister who returned could no longer get out of bed.
From that day on, the sister's younger sibling and mother took turns coming over to stay and nurse her.
Unable to do anything, Nyango would crawl into his sister's futon and purr.
When he purred as loudly as he could, his sister looked happy too.
That is why Nyango never left his sister's side for even a moment.
A few days later, his sister grew cold while she slept and never woke up again.
As she cried, her mother spoke to the cold sister.
"It's good that you were able to spend your final moments with your favorite cat," she said.
After that, Nyango was taken in by his sister's mother.
His sister's mother also loved and cared for Nyango very much.
But every time he saw his sister's photo on the Buddhist altar, he would remember something, and Nyango's heart would sway with anticipation and anxiety.
One day, several years later, Nyango ran away from home.
He climbed into the back of a truck and traveled far away.
In search of something.
The stray cat life after that was terrible.
On a day when cold, heavy rain fell for three days straight, I couldn't eat anything, and I waited for the rain to stop while shivering and drinking muddy water.
One sunny afternoon, while I was basking in the sun, a brat threw a stone at me.
It hurt.
When I was thirsty and drinking clean water from a bucket at a house I didn't know, the owner found me, splashed water on me, and yelled at me.
I was soaked, and I was so scared.
There was a time I stayed for a few years at the home of a kind old woman living alone who would give me food.
On the TV at the old woman's house, Komon-sama would always hold up his inro every single day.
Nyangostar became obsessed with Komon-sama.
But Nyangostar had been searching for something all along.
After a while, I decided to leave the old woman's house where I could get steady meals.
Every time Nyangostar felt hungry during his stray life, there was one page of memories he would look back on again and again.
It was the page of happiness where the older sister would say to Nyangostar,
I am happy because you are here, Kotaro. Let's be together forever. Thank you.
She would say that with a look of pure happiness and a huge smile, gently stroking Nyangostar.
I was shocked.
Huh?
You're kidding, right?
Nyangostar's old name was Kotaro.
That is my name.
After that, memories of my sister came back to me irregularly, moving back and forth through time.
One day, when my sister was still healthy, she said something like this.
“On my middle school field trip, I saw a karesansui (dry landscape garden) for the first time. That space was like the universe. I thought maybe aliens had descended from the sky onto the city of Kyoto and drawn the universe there. That garden, you know. People generally say it represents nature, but it looked different only to me. There were all sorts of universes in that garden. It’s a bit far, but someday I want to show it to Kotaro, too.”
I see.
So that’s why it was a karesansui.
One day, while lying in bed unable to move, my sister said this to Nyango.
“Hey, Kotaro. Even if we are reborn, I want to meet you again. How can we meet? I know! Why don’t we make a promise like this? When I’m reborn next time, I’ll be named Kotaro and I’ll be waiting for you. Then you’ll be able to find me, right?”
“It’s a promise. You must find me.”
“Next time, it would be fun if we could chat, fight, laugh together, and be like friends, wouldn’t it?”
And finally,
“Hey, Kotaro.”
“If we manage to meet again, let’s go see the ocean!”
“And then, let’s eat a bento together under the cherry blossoms in full bloom.”
Ah, that’s right. Now everything is connected.
That day, realizing the end of my life was near,
it was I who left those words for my pet cat, Kotaro.
My past life was my sister.
My sister was me.
Nyango granted my wish.
Tears, my tears won’t stop.
But I don’t know the meaning of these tears.
Am I sad, frustrated, or happy? None of those are quite right.
Various memories intersect.
Memories I shouldn’t have are coming back to life within me.
I asked Nyango, whose life was fading, one last question.
“Why...? Why did you do it! Instead of continuing a painful life as a stray, wouldn’t it have been better to just be reborn and appear before me? Why did you go to such lengths to keep searching for me all this time?”
"You really don't understand anything, do you?"
"If I am reborn,"
"your memories of me will disappear."
"Then I won't be able to find you anymore."
"If you hadn't made that deal with the devil,"
"you wouldn't have been able to escape your fate of dying young."
"I've been searching for you for so, so long. For you."
The End🐾
—Epilogue🐾—
Hey, listen, Nyangostar.
My baggy school uniform arrived today.
Next week is the middle school entrance ceremony.
I'm walking alone through the pink cherry blossom-lined street right now.
I can walk anywhere in this town that I once ran through with Nyangostar.
Hey, listen, Nyangostar.
After that, my mom, my dad, and my doctor couldn't quite believe that my heart had completely healed.
I intend to live this life that Nyangostar left for me to the fullest.
Hey, listen, Nyangostar.
I've made up my mind.
Until this life ends, I will keep searching for you.
Because I believe we will surely meet again.
No matter how many times we are reborn, Nyangostar and I are friends forever.
And once again, I will call out like this.
You are the most popular star in the world.
Nyangostar.

I always think about this.
The amazing thing about novels is their freedom.
They hold the potential to change into any form, whether future or past.
In this ultimately free world♾️
I have been possessed by the demons of this world,
and I am addicted to the freedom of storytelling forever🐾
