A groundbreaking reading method I discovered, despite hating (and struggling with) reading!
Things I hate (and struggle with)
Hello, I'm MMM (Mamimu).
Let me share something shocking here.
Actually, I...
hate reading books...
I post many book reviews on this note.
Because of that, you might think, "She's a bookworm!" but fundamentally,I really don't want to read.
My concentration doesn't last, and I can't get immersed in them either.
Why I read
On the other hand, if you ask "Why do you read?" it's because I felt that"self-improvement"and"things I have questions about"might be solved through reading.
Fortunately, I often get to read business books at work.
I'm the type who thinks, "If I'm going to use my own time to read, I want to read in a way that benefits me!"
I mean, it's a waste otherwise, isn't it? It takes so much time to read!
I tried learning speed reading
About five years ago,
"I hate reading too much"
"Should I go learn speed reading to start liking books..."
"If I can read faster, maybe I'll naturally start to like it"
I attended speed reading lessons.
As for what happened as a result,
I became able to read faster, but fundamentally, I still hate reading.
That's where I settled.
The act of reading, which is far from "fun"
For me, "reading" itself is nothing but painful.I've never thought of it as fun.
On the other hand,I do think it's a tool for learning things I don't know,so I don't think reading is meaningless.
Why is it not fun?
It was because of the gap between my "cognitive characteristics" and "reading."
About two years ago, through a derivative of a self-analysis tool, I encountered something called"cognitive characteristics."My diagnosis results are below.

Previously,
・Person A who understands by converting language into illustrations (3D, etc.) to visualize・
Person B who recognizes language as languageI gained insight by reading a report that the difference lies in "cognitive attributes."
"That's exactly me... I'm Person B...!"
I remember thinking that.
The reason is that what people around me often say,
"When I read a book, scenes come to mind"
"I get immersed in the world of the book"
was something Icouldn't understand at all.
The "Linguistic Abstract Type" that excels at processing information by diagramming text
The "Linguistic Abstract Type" excels at processing information received from characters and text by diagramming it. They associate difficult-to-understand text with characters, numbers, and diagrams to remember it. People who find it easier to remember things by writing them down when they are learning something can be called the Linguistic Abstract Type. For example, people who learn English vocabulary by repeatedly writing it down have the characteristics of the Linguistic Abstract Type.
"I understand characters while they remain in the form of 'characters' (a strong tendency to understand this way)"
I remember learning about this characteristic of mine in 2022 and being convinced, thinking, "So that's why I couldn't understand what everyone was saying!"
I thought there was something wrong with me because the world of books didn't flow into my head and I couldn't immerse myself in them, but that wasn't the case. I'm relieved.
It was a matter of linguistic comprehension.
From that perspective, even when people tried to evangelize to me that "books are fun because they let you imagine scenes and show you worlds you've never seen," it didn't click for me.Text remained just text.
I also understand now why I can read manga but get bored with novels.
In manga, the scenery is provided right in front of you, so you just have to visually recognize and scan the text of the dialogue.Novels require the power to actively work on imagining the scene. This difference might be significant.
Business books are similar to school textbooks.
That might be why I can read them.
Why am I, who has "never thought reading 'novels' was fun," reading "business books," summarizing them, and writing them up on note like this...?
The answer is probably"Because the knowledge I want is written there."I think.
In the past, I thought, "Business books are stiffer than novels, so they're even more painful to read!"
Having said that, while working, there were many situations where I feltthe "knowledge" written in the book's title was necessary. As a result, I was in a situation where I had no choice but to read them.
The "One Sheet of Paper!" Reading Method
And so (being a masochist), I spent more time facing books, even while suffering.
And I started to think, "If I'm going to spend the time, I want it to become part of me."
If I'm going to the trouble, I want to remember the contents of the books I've read and summarize them. But summarizing takes time!
It's a greedy set at this point.
In the midst of all this, this was the book I encountered.
Thank you, summer Kindle sale!
The "One Sheet of Paper!" Reading Method: Read Faster, Never Forget, and Deepen Your Thinking
There is a concept of summarizing on "one sheet of paper" (I hear it often). They often say it at Toyota, don't they.
This is apparently the "reading version" of that.
I've always liked the "act of summarizing" itself.
Since I was in elementary school, I was good at homework assignments like "Summarize this on one A4 sheet" or "Summarize your research report."
I thought, "Isn't this book perfect for me?"
That said, please look at my articles from the past.
When I try to keep a reading record,
1. The volume is large (books have over 100 pages, after all)
2. The hurdle is high
3. There is no ease (it's a heavy lift)
It was a triple threat.
However, with this method, I can summarize it on one sheet, and I can express the insights I gained from this book in concise sentences...!
I summarized this book using the "One-Sheet" method
I wrote the following article previously.
When I summarized my reading notes using the grid notebook method,it just took so much time! It was tough!

If you're thinking, "Can't summarizing books be easier!?"
then I definitely recommend the"One-Sheet" method.
I summarized the contents of this book (The "One-Sheet" Reading Method) using the "One-Sheet" method.
The general steps are as follows.
1. Divide the paper
2. Write the title in the top left, and "What I want to learn/know from this book" in the top rightWhat I want to learn/know from this book3. While picking out keywords and sentences that seem to be the answer to (2) (*this is important),
keep writing them down in the left column4. Based on (3),
express the answer to (2) in your own words5. Ask yourself "What does that mean specifically?" or "Why do I think that?" regarding the result of (4)6. Finally, take what you derived from the question "What can I do in the future?" and apply it to your daily life to take action
For detailed instructions on how to summarize, please read the book!

The parts circled in red are the points I thought were important.
Q: What I want to know from this book
A: The answer I got from this book
What?: What does that mean specifically?
Why?: Why do I think that?
How?: How will I use this in the future?
Left space: Hints for deriving A
You can just look at it from this perspective.
The summary fits on one sheet, and it's easy to read, which is great.
Purpose Request
This book uses a technique calledPurpose Request.
Purpose Request refers to "purpose" and "request."
It means you, the reader, make a request to the "book or author" to "teach me what I want to know and learn."
I will summarize this book using Purpose Request.
The question text below was easier to understand, so I changed the nuance slightly from the one in the image.
Q. (Purpose/Question)
What is a way to read books that you won't forget?
A.
Asking the book what you want to know and thinking about how to apply it to practice
Summary (Abstract)
To summarize, it is as follows.
The way to not forget what you read in a book is to ask the book what you want to know and think about how to apply it to a practical level. Reading should be done
"self-centeredly", always considering whether you have found out what you wanted to know. Also, I recommend a method where you extract your "own questions" and the keywords that solve them onto a single sheet of paper, and then write down the "answers," "specifics," and "NEXT steps" from there. By practicing this method,
you can read the book from the perspective of whether it is helping you achieve your goal (= solving your own questions). Write on the paper using expressions that can be understood by others as well. If you can break it down to a level where you can explain it to someone else, your own understanding will also deepen
. First, once I read one book, I want to get into the habit of summarizing it on "a single sheet of paper."
Conclusion
It can be summarized in a short time, and for me, who is an analog person but also an efficiency freak, this is really great!
I plan to summarize my reading records in this format from now on!
