Democracy of Athens - The Beginning of the Idea of Citizen Participation in Politics
Around the 5th century BC, in the ancient Greek city-state of Athens, a democracy (Democracy) developed in which citizens participated directly in politics.
The word "democracy" comes from the Greek words demos (people) and kratos (rule/power), meaning "rule by the people."
In Athens, citizens gathered in the Assembly to discuss and decide on important policies such as legislation, war, and diplomacy through voting.
Additionally, some public offices were chosen by lot, giving many citizens the opportunity to participate in politics.
This is a representative example of direct democracy , where citizens themselves make decisions, rather than the indirect democracy of electing representatives as seen today.
On the other hand, participation in this system was limited to adult male citizens; women, slaves, and foreigners (resident aliens) were excluded from political participation.
Therefore, there are many points that differ significantly from modern democracy.
Nevertheless, the idea that "politics is something decided by the participation of citizens, not just by a few rulers" was passed down to subsequent republicanism, parliamentary politics, and modern democracy.
Ancient Athenian democracy occupies an important position in the history of political systems as one of the starting points for the ideals of democracy adopted by countries around the world today.
