Electricity and magnetism are not separate phenomena.
This concept, which is now considered common knowledge, was revealed through numerous discoveries in the 19th century.
In the 18th century, Coulomb's law allowed for a quantitative understanding of electrical force, and in the 19th century, Ohm's law demonstrated the relationship between current, voltage, and resistance.
Then, in 1831, Michael Faraday discovered "electromagnetic induction," where a changing magnetic field generates an electric current, experimentally proving that electricity and magnetism are deeply connected.
Furthermore, Heinrich Lenz showed that an induced current always flows in a direction that opposes the change in the magnetic field, and published a law explaining this direction.
These discoveries revealed the interaction that electric current generates a magnetic field, and a changing magnetic field generates an electric current, showing that electricity and magnetism are not independent entities, but rather a single unified natural phenomenon.
The field of study that systematically organizes this concept is Electromagnetism.
Electromagnetism treats static electricity, electric current, magnetic fields, and electromagnetic induction as a single theory, which was later unified into four equations by James Clerk Maxwell.
As a result, it was deduced that light itself is an electromagnetic wave, and it came to be understood that radio waves, infrared rays, visible light, ultraviolet rays, X-rays, and gamma rays are all members of the same electromagnetic wave family.
In today's society, countless technologies, ranging from power plants to power grids, motors, communications, computers, smartphones, MRIs, and artificial satellites, are built upon electromagnetism.
Electromagnetism has become the foundation supporting modern civilization by understanding the electricity and magnetism that exist in the natural world as a single phenomenon.
