In my 60s, heading to a new classroom. The helper introductory training is about to begin
I am Kumataro Yokoyama, a training instructor and sign language interpreter.
While utilizing AI, I share information for seniors, as well as introductions to books and gadgets.
The nursing staff introductory training is finally about to begin.
It has been a while since I applied for the course, and before I knew it, the start date is just around the corner.
I am filled with a mix of anticipation for learning something new and a little bit of anxiety.
What kind of people will be gathering there?
At times like this, I tend to overthink things.
How many students will there be?
What will the age range be like?
Will there be any other men?
Could it be that I am the only middle-aged guy there?
Such delusions keep expanding one after another.
Of course, once it actually starts, it probably won't be a big deal.
Even so, everyone feels a little nervous before going to a new place for the first time.
The happiness of being in a place of learning
It is not that I have no anxiety at all.
However, I am looking forward to it even more than that.
Even in my 60s, I can still learn new things.
I can encounter knowledge and skills I didn't know before.
I can meet people who share the same goals.
I think having such an opportunity is something to be very grateful for.
When I was a student, studying was an obligation.
But now, it is different.
I choose for myself and go to learn of my own volition.
That is precisely why I find the time spent learning so enjoyable.
The tension of not being able to miss a single day
There is one major pressure regarding this training.
That is absence.
For the nursing care staff introductory training, if you miss even one session, you cannot receive the certificate of completion.
Of course, there are sometimes supplementary lecture systems, but basically, participation in the entire schedule is required.
I consider health management to be part of the training as well.
For the next few months, my Sundays will revolve around this training.
I cannot let my guard down easily.
Imagining myself as a helper
There is something I think about while taking the training.
It is about what kind of work style I will have once I successfully complete it.
I do not intend to make nursing care my main profession.
However, I hope to be able to do work that is useful to others while utilizing my own caregiving experience.
Will it be home care?
Will it be facility care?
Will it be a way of working that only involves short hours?
Nothing has been decided yet.
That is precisely why I intend to think about it while I learn.
It is never too late for a new challenge
When people reach their 60s, fewer start new things.
However, I think the opposite is true.
It is precisely because you have a little more free time that this is an age where you can take on new challenges.
Just as I have continued to learn sign language interpretation, this time I will learn about nursing care.
I do not know what kind of encounters or discoveries lie ahead.
But I intend to head to the classroom looking forward to them.
The introductory training is finally starting.
While I am a little nervous, I will enjoy these days of new learning.
