[Thorough Comparison] Diagnostic Methods for Deepening Self-Understanding: How to Distinguish Between MBTI and the Big Five?
Good morning! This is pon✨
Recently, I've been hearing the unfamiliar terms "Big Five" and "MBTI".
They seem to be tools for self-analysis, and they are apparently being used in business settings as well.
I've researched and summarized them to help with self-understanding!
If you're curious, please take a look.
I've also included my own Big Five diagnostic results from a free test as a bonus at the end.
I hope you find it helpful!!
Chapter 1: Characteristics and Applications of the Big Five
What is the Big Five? A Highly Reliable "Map of Personality"
"I want to know myself better," "I don't know what kind of work style suits me"—
The "Big Five" is gaining attention as a tool to answer such concerns.
This is a theory that classifies human personality into the following five traits and captures each on a "continuous scale."

What's important here is that "high or low scores do not mean good or bad."
There is no "correct" personality, and each tendency has its own strengths and weaknesses.
Using it for self-understanding: Finding "behavioral habits" from characteristics
For example, are you the type who "performs best when there's a deadline"?
Or are you the type who "gets anxious without plenty of time"?
Behind these behavioral tendencies, scores for conscientiousness and neuroticism may be having an influence.
In fact, in the case of one business professional—
"I have high 'conscientiousness,' so I like to proceed according to plan. However, I tend to get anxious all at once when plans fall apart. I was convinced after the diagnosis showed that my 'neuroticism' was also on the higher side."
was a comment they made.
In this way, by knowing your own traits, you can calmly re-examine "why you feel that way" and "how you should respond."
Applying it to career and workplace selection
The Big Five can also serve as a hint for considering career aptitude and compatibility with work styles.

For those who are thinking about changing jobs or starting a side hustle but don't know what they are suited for,
I recommend starting by re-examining the 'foundation of your work style' from this perspective.
A 'Common Language' That Can Also Be Used in Human Relationships
Is there anyone like this around you?
A colleague who answers questions immediately but doesn't think very deeply
A friend who rarely speaks their mind and prioritizes the atmosphere of the room
Such differences may stem from differences in extraversion and agreeableness.
The Big Five is also effective as a 'common language' for understanding the characteristics of others.
By simply recognizing that 'that person has this kind of tendency' without denying personality differences, you can prevent unnecessary stress and misunderstandings.
'Diagnostic results are just a map'—don't over-rely on them, master them
No matter how scientifically backed a theory is, it is not omnipotent.
Let's also keep in mind the following limitations.
Cultural bias: It is a theory designed based on Western standards
Limitations of self-reporting: Thinking of 'wanting to be seen well' is easily reflected in the results
Limitations of a single perspective: It is difficult to describe an entire personality with just 5 factors
The most effective way to use diagnostic results is not to view them as 'answers,' but as 'hints' or 'conversation starters.'
Chapter 2: MBTI Features and How to Use Them
What is MBTI, which verbalizes 'your true self'?
MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) is a personality indicator that classifies people's 'preferences' for information processing and decision-making into 16 types, based on the theories of Swiss psychologist Jung.

For example, 'ENFP' is an 'enthusiastic idea person' type who is sociable and likes free thinking.
'ISTJ' is a 'trusted practitioner' who is steady and consistent, and so on; the feature is that you can positively verbalize your 'true self'.
Why is MBTI so widely supported?
The reason MBTI is supported by so many people lies in its
“ability to identify personality types with simple questions”
“ability to accept one's own tendencies positively”
“ability to organize the ‘fuzziness’ of human relationships”
and the balance between “sense of conviction” and “ease of use”.
On social media, it is also popular as a conversation starter, such as “I am an INFP” or “My boyfriend is an ESTJ.” For example, here are some ways to use it—
“When my introverted boyfriend said, ‘I want to be alone for a bit today,’ I was able to understand it by thinking, ‘That’s typical for an I-type.’”
“I used to tell my feeling-type (F) daughter, ‘Explain things more logically,’ but now I respect her values that prioritize compassion.”
MBTI is also a tool that gives you a perspective to understand the ‘differences’ in others not as something to be denied, but as ‘differences in preference’.
Application Example 1: Self-Understanding and Communication Improvement
MBTI serves as a trigger to re-examine your own behavioral tendencies.
For example—
Extroverted (E): ‘Thoughts come together by talking’ → Better at speaking up in meetings
Introverted (I): ‘Think before speaking’ → Perform better when the agenda is known in advance
Feeling (F): ‘Consider others’ feelings’ → Do not forget ‘consideration’ even when expressing opinions
Thinking (T): ‘Judge based on logic’ → Less likely to be swayed by emotions
By understanding these tendencies, you can change communication with others from ‘conflict’ to ‘adjustment’.
Application Example 2: Use in Teams and Educational Settings
MBTI is also used for team building in companies and schools. By sharing ‘what each person values’ based on the diagnostic results,
the team's sense of trust and psychological safetyare more likely to increase.
In an actual case—
There are reports that an ENFJ manager was able to improve communication with an ENTJ subordinate by saying, "I value 'empathy,' so I want the story before the numbers."
By sharing "personality types," it becomes a tool to "verbalize and adjust" differences in values that are otherwise difficult to see outside of work.
Sharing "personality types" becomes a tool that allows you to "verbalize and adjust" differences in values that are hard to see outside of work.
Caution: 3 things to keep in mind to avoid "trusting MBTI too much"
There are limits to scientific reliability
→ Unlike the Big Five, it lacks statistical backing, and academic evaluation is divided"Free tests" are for reference only
→ The official MBTI is designed to include feedback from a qualified professional
→ Understand that the "MBTI-like" tests trending on social media are just for entertainmentDon't think you "must live according to your type"
→ It's not that ENFP = free spirit and ISTJ = serious
→ "These are just tendencies, not the entirety of a person"
The important thing is to view MBTI not as a "label that defines your life," but as a "starting point for thinking about how to interact with yourself and others."
Chapter 3: Differences and How to Choose Between the Big Five and MBTI
A chapter answering "Which one should I choose?"
The "Big Five" and "MBTI" are often heard of as personality tests.
Both are useful tools for self-understanding, buttheir theories and strengths are completely different.
In this article, to answer questions like "Which one suits me?" and "Should I do both?"we will organize the differences and how to choose.
Commonalities: Both are "tools for self-understanding"
First, both share the following commonalities:
You can verbalize your personality tendencies
They can be used to understand and improve interpersonal relationships
They are structured to encourage "awareness for action," not just to end with the diagnosis
In other words, whichever you choose, you will gain "hints for looking at yourself."
Difference 1: Theoretical foundation and approach

The Big Five is about "objectifying yourself through scores,"
while MBTI is about "understanding yourself through types."
Difference 2: Different usage and benefits
✔ What the Big Five excels at
Career planning, organizational analysis, stress management
When you want to objectively grasp long-term tendencies
Example: "I have high conscientiousness and also high neuroticism... I'm meticulous but also prone to stress" → Can be applied to work distribution
✔ What MBTI excels at
Self-acceptance, mutual understanding, team building
When you want to put differences with others into "words" and have a dialogue
Example: "I (INFP) am an intuitive/feeling type, and he (ISTJ) is a sensing/thinking type. I finally understand why we weren't on the same page."
In this way, you can distinguish them as Big Five for analysis / MBTI for conversation and introspection.
There is also the option of using them together
Actually, it is most effective to "combine and use" both diagnostics depending on your purpose.

✅ Real-life example: "As an ENFP, I kept being told I was 'too free-spirited' and felt down, but learning through the Big Five that 'high extraversion and openness' are strengths made me want to leverage them instead."
✅ Another real-life example: "I had low agreeableness and was always an outsider in the team, but I was able to find a way of working that suits my 'thinking + introverted' self through MBTI."
This kind of "multi-faceted self-understanding" is the real secret to making the most of diagnostic tools.
Chapter 4: How to connect diagnostic results to "action"
Diagnosis is a "start," not a "goal"
When you take a personality test, you might feel convinced or relieved, thinking, "Oh, so I have these tendencies."
However, if you just forget the results, your hard-earned self-understanding will remain nothing more than "information."
The important thing is to try changing at least one behavior based on the diagnostic results.
In this chapter, we will introduce practical steps to translate diagnostic results into 'action' rather than letting them end as mere 'knowledge'.
Step 1: Keep an 'Insight Memo'
Immediately after taking the test, write down the points that made you think, 'I see.'
For example:
MBTI result was 'ENFP', and I understood the tendency of being 'easily bored'
Big Five result showed 'high conscientiousness but also high neuroticism', and I realized that stress management is a challenge
Recording these 'verbalized insights' about yourself serves as a starting point for your next action.
Step 2: Decide on one action to leverage your 'strengths'
Next, think about 'how can I leverage my current strengths?' and
decide on a small action.
High Extraversion → Try talking to one new person every week
High Conscientiousness → Visualize tasks and complete them systematically to boost self-efficacy
ENFJ (Empathic type) → Be conscious of asking colleagues, 'How have you been lately?' to show care
INTP (Thinking type) → When making proposals, add consideration for the other person's feelings, not just numbers
You don't need to do these actions 'perfectly'.What matters is that you 'tried it even once'.
Step 3: Perform regular 'reflections'
Diagnostic results are merely a snapshot of 'who you are now'.
Tendencies can change little by little due to life events or environmental changes.
We recommend setting a 'day to reflect on yourself every three months'.
✅ 'I feel like I've become more resilient to stress than before'
✅ 'I couldn't talk to people on my own before, but now I can do it naturally'
When you notice such small changes, your self-efficacy increases, and the sense of growth leads to confidence.
Step 4: Freeing Yourself from 'Labels'
MBTI and Big Five diagnostic results are useful tools that tell you about your 'tendencies.'
However, they are merely 'tools' and not 'who you are yourself.'
I have to act this way because I'm an ENFP
I can't do it because my neuroticism is high
...there is absolutely no need to think this way.
Instead of using the diagnosis as a 'box that restricts you,'using it as a 'hint to broaden your options'is the most important attitude to have.
✅ Checklist of what you gained from this article
If you can check even one of the following three, you are ready to 'make the most' of your diagnosis.
I was able to understand and accept my personality tendencies
I was able to accept the diagnostic results as 'hints' rather than 'definitive labels'
I thought of 'one action' I want to try starting tomorrow
✨ Next Step: Action Proposal for You
Take the official MBTI/Big Five assessment (use a reliable site)
Record your results in a notebook or app to 'visualize' your insights
If you'd like, please share your type or insights in the comments section.
Your words will become a hint that helps someone else's self-understanding.
🎁 Bonus: I'm revealing my own Big Five diagnostic results!
Thank you for reading this far.
Finally, as a little 'aside,'I will share my own Big Five diagnostic resultswith you.
(Tool used: https://big5-basic.com/front/index.php?route=logic/diagnosis)
💬 Summary of results (In a word, I am...)
**'An extrovert who doesn't push themselves forward, calm but realistic, a slightly serious balancer type.'**
🔍 Diagnostic Results for Each Trait
Sociability (Extraversion)
→ Leaning toward extraversion. You can handle social situations as well as the average person, maintaining a 'just right' distance—neither too outgoing nor too reserved.Agreeableness (Cooperation)
→ Average. You have a good balance of compassion and control over hostility, and you are cooperative with others. You are the type who also values rules and norms.Adaptability (Conscientiousness)
→ Serious and sensible. You are not too hard on yourself and are tolerant of others. You have a sense of responsibility and often find yourself in a position where you are trusted.Mental Strength (Neuroticism)
→ Stable type. Your emotional fluctuations are relatively small. You rarely get significantly upset or become aggressive toward others.Creativity (Openness)
→ Your intellectual curiosity is high, and you enjoy discussions and logical thinking. However, you are a bit cautious when it comes to decision-making, and you have a strong practical side.Stress Situation / Tolerance
→ Both are average; you seem to be the type who doesn't easily accumulate stress and can handle problems appropriately.
🧭 How am I utilizing this diagnosis?
I believe that 'what you felt' from these results is actually the most important thing.
Sociability that isn't too outgoing → Can leverage the balance of being able to act as a listener
Respect for rules + logical thinking → Can communicate in a way that is easy for readers to understand and is sincere
Challenges in decision-making and flexibility → Currently conscious of 'creating an environment where I don't have to make immediate decisions'
Since learning the 'contours of my personality,' I feel that the stress in my relationships and work has decreased significantly.
If you read this article and 'tried the diagnosis yourself' or found that you were a 'similar/different type,'
please let me know in the comments section.
Sharing types among readers might also become a 'place for dialogue' that leads to empathy and learning.
