A New Rembrandt Discovery, Miracles Told by Light: "The Vision of Zacharias in the Temple" Revived at the Rijksmuseum
Hello. I'm Miil, living in the Netherlands and a lover of art and chocolate.
Today, some exciting news has come in: a new Rembrandt work has been discovered.

According to the announcement by the Rijksmuseum on March 2, 2026, The Vision of Zacharias in the Temple, painted by a 27-year-old Rembrandt in 1633, has been recognized as an "authentic" work for the first time in 65 years.
The Vision of Zacharias in the Temple is a work that had long been sleeping deep within a private collection.
Since it was judged as "not a Rembrandt" in 1961, it had remained almost entirely unseen by anyone, but thanks to the current owner entrusting it to the Rijksmuseum, a thorough two-year investigation was able to be conducted.
The investigation used the same cutting-edge technology as the Night Watch restoration project.
By analyzing pigments with MA-XRF, determining the age of the panel through dendrochronology, and examining even the subtle brushstrokes of the signature... the result was "undoubtedly by Rembrandt's own hand."

Looking at the canvas, we see the darkness of the temple where the high priest Zacharias is praying.
The angel Gabriel is not depicted. Instead, only the light pouring down from the upper right reveals his presence. The surprise, doubt, and slight flicker of joy on Zacharias's face.
The "magic of light" of the young Rembrandt is already breathing here.

The brilliance of lead-tin yellow, the free touch of the fabric, the deep shadows. I feel that everything that leads to the later Night Watch and his late-life portraits is condensed into this one piece.
This work will be on long-term display at the Rijksmuseum starting March 4th (on loan from a private collection).
If you are going to Amsterdam, please be sure to see this work.
