Even the Wind Chime Can't Sleep | Kazemakase Literature Club "Early Summer"
When early summer arrives, I can hear the sound of a wind chime from the room next door.
Chirin.
Chiririn.
It is a sound with a strange, irregular rhythm.
Rather than being swayed by the night breeze,
I felt as if someone was ringing it with emotion.
I liked that sound.
Even on days when I came home tired from work,
if I opened the window, the wind chime would ring.
A room where one lives alone can sometimes be too quiet.
That is why, when I heard the sound of the wind chime,
I felt a little relieved, thinking that someone was living right next door.
The early summer night feels like a slightly kinder world. The person next door must be a kind person, too.
Chirin.
Chiririn.
With that pleasant sound, I am drawn into sleep.
---
(Gotcha!)
It was the moment I closed the screen door.
Why?
How did it get in?
Every time I turn off the light,
there is a buzzing sound.
I swing my electric racket at the hateful mosquito. Fanned by the air pressure, the wind chime rings noisily.
Chirin.
(Whoa, it came this way!)
Swish!
Chiririn.
(Come and get meeeee!)
Drenched in sweat, I continued my death match with the mosquito.
It didn't look like I would be able to sleep tonight.
Chirin.
Chiririn.
I have participated in this project.
