Local Chichibu Gourmet Part 2: Chicken Katsu Curry at Narita-ya | A Lunch Spot to Visit After Imamiya Shrine
If you are walking around the town of Chichibu,
I recommend starting at Imamiya Shrine.
(See the related articles section for a guide on how to walk around Imamiya Shrine.)
Known as a shrine for the Dragon God, this place
has a quiet atmosphere despite being in the center of town.
And just a short walk from Imamiya Shrine,
there is a restaurant that has been loved by locals for a long time.
It is a place filled with memories
that I have been visiting since I was a child.
Narita-ya in my childhood
When I think of my memories of Narita-ya as a child,
I think of these menu items.
・Soda water
(a nostalgic flavor made by mixing syrup with carbonated water)
・Parfait
(the classic version topped with banana and chocolate)
When I was a child, I looked forward to eating those.
Please note that these are no longer on the menu, so please be aware of that.
I also remember the ramen having a traditional flavor
and being very delicious.
There are some places where you know everything you eat will be good, right?
For me,
Narita-ya is exactly that kind of place.
Flavors passed down from the previous generation
The restaurant has passed from the previous owner
to his son, who runs it now.
Although it now has the atmosphere of a Western-style restaurant,
the menu from the previous generation has been carefully preserved.
One of those items is the Chicken Katsu-ju.
They also have a standard pork katsu-ju, but
my family has always loved this chicken katsu-ju.
I am truly grateful that they have kept the flavors from the past.
By the way, if I am getting takeout,
my only choice is the Chicken Katsu-ju.
If I am eating at the restaurant, it is the Chicken Katsu Curry.
If you are eating at the restaurant,
the basic staple is the daily lunch special.
However, if I had to recommend just one dish,
it would definitely be this.
Chicken Katsu Curry.
(The title image is a large portion)
Tender chicken cutlet.
Hearty curry.
And the side of potato salad.
This combination is just perfect.
You can start with the cutlet.
You can start with the curry and rice.
You can eat the potato salad first.
There is no set way to eat it.
No matter where you take your first bite,
"Delicious"
That is all that will come out.
And then, for some reason, I realized that
I have been introducing shrines and curry together, such as Hachidoriya's green curry for Mitsumine Shrine
and Narita-ya's chicken katsu curry for Imamiya Shrine,
but I am not doing it intentionally..
It is truly just a coincidence..
Perfect for a walk through Chichibu town
Even on weekdays, the lunch service is always crowded with locals,
so perhaps it would be better for securing my own seat
if I didn't introduce it at all...
If
you start your walk through Chichibu from Imamiya Shrine
visit Imamiya Shrine before lunch,
and on the way to Chichibu Shrine,
stop by for Narita-ya's chicken katsu curry.
I think that is a pretty good choice.
Of course, everything on the menu is delicious.
English Summary
Narita-ya is a long-loved local restaurant near Imamiya Shrine in Chichibu.
If you start your Chichibu walk from the shrine,
this place is a perfect stop for lunch.
My recommendation is the Chicken Katsu Curry —
crispy chicken cutlet with rich Japanese curry and potato salad.
It’s a nostalgic local taste that many people in Chichibu grew up with.
